The Global Impact of Modern Slavery or Human Trafficking
When she was eighteen, Chong Kim, a normal girl from Oklahoma, was abducted by the man whom she had been dating. He and other traffickers forced her and a large number of other young women to live in storage units where they were then transported across the United States as part of a prostitution ring. Several years later, she finally managed to escape through a vent in a Las Vegas casino (The Survivor Archives). Unfortunately, Kim’s story is not a rare occurrence. Modern slavery, more frequently referred to under the broader term “human trafficking,” has shown to be an incredibly serious global issue.

By definition, human trafficking is “the recruitment, transportation, harboring, or receipt of persons by the threat or use of kidnapping, force, fraud, deception or coercion, or by the giving or receiving of unlawful payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, and for the purpose of sexual exploitation or forced labor” ("Background Information."). This essentially means that anyone in any location can be a victim of human trafficking if the three main specifics- the act of trafficking, the means of trafficking, and the purpose of trafficking- stated apply to the given situation (UNODC). By 1600, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and North America were all shipping Africans away from their homeland to work as slaves in European countries (Young, 2011). Although this was not the first known instances of human trafficking, it is noted as the most organized, intentional persecution of a specific population. It wasn’t until 1865 that slavery was made illegal in the United States. However, human trafficking continued to persist in various ways. There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. Other forms of human trafficking are labor trafficking, slavery and in some cases human trafficking consist of the removal of organs. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. In the United States, human trafficking has taken on different forms than what is normally thought of as human trafficking. It can range from a migrant laborer wanting to get a job to be able to support his family to survive who is then forced into manipulative work to a child running away to get away from abuse that is happening at home and the person that is helping the child get away from the abusive situation at home turns out to be exploiting him or her to make a profit (Farrell et al, 2014). According the International Labour Organization has estimated that 20.9 million people are involved in human trafficking in the whole world, with 1.5 million victims are in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. In 2011, there were 3,969 convictions worldwide, and there were only 151 convictions in the United States.

The United States abolished slavery in 1865, the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (The United States Constitution). We never thought that over one-hundred years later there would be a new form of slavery that has affected so many people around the globe. Human trafficking is another name for modern-day slavery, where the victims involved are forced, coerced and deceived into labor and sexual exploitation. Most human trafficking victims are forced into the trade by the false promises made regarding job opportunities. Many women from third world countries are lured into this trade with the bait of false marriages or false jobs.
Several young females were involved and they were brought into the U.S. illegally with the use of fake passports. They then used these fake passports to obtain visas. The National Immigration Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security discovered them and a total of 74 suspects from the trafficking ring were brought in for investigation. This article outlines many misconceptions and falsehoods regarding human trafficking and provides realistic information about where trafficking occurs, important elements that lead to trafficking, types of human trafficking, treatment of victims, and possible roots that cause the problem. The purpose of this article is to disprove many common believes that arise when discussing human trafficking. Firstly, helping victims of human trafficking is an extremely difficult process because most of the victims do not see themselves as victims, and the authorities of many countries, including the US, don’t take enough consideration for this issue. It is a billion dollar business that seems to bring the worst out of people from the ones that are involved in the trafficking and the ones that are abusing the victims.
