A Net with Holes- book review of Globalization: a short history
The term globalization brings forth a broad phenomenon across temporal and spatial scales, covering multi-dimensional aspects of our society including social, political, cultural and so on. In Globalization: a short history, as the name of the book suggests, Jürgen Osterhammel and Niels P. Petersson provide a brief overview of the emergence of today’s globalization phenomenon. They argue that although the term gained popularity only in recent decades, globalization is in fact not a modern phenomenon but a historical process that can be traced back to as early as the High Middle Ages, long before the term was even invented. They distinguish global history from world history or

The explanation given is that people in other parts of the world undergo “a substantial amount of local cooperation and adaptation” (Osterhammel & Petersson, 2005). The logic is that the world is not westernized because non-Westerners modify the Western ways according to their local contexts through a process known as glocalization. However, we need to be aware of the assumption- that the rest of the world is on the receiving end while the West is on the giving end. They thus imply that the influence of globalization occurs in one and only one direction- from the West to the rest. I believe that this assumption is substantially biased towards the West and the authors discounted the reciprocal influence from the rest of the world towards the West. For example, gunpowder was believed to be invented in the 9th century in China and the technology spread through the Middle East and then into Europe in the 13th century(Buchanan, 2006). Transfer of technology and ideas happened in mutual directions and such a one-way-only assumption makes their arguments less …show more content…
For instance, when talking about the “Double Revolution”, the authors thoroughly examine the far-reaching impact of the Industrial Revolution. In contrast, there is little analysis on how French Revolution had great political impacts in triggering more significant events such as the America’s independence which in turn enhanced global integration. For the post-war period after 1945, the institutions of global economy or mainly the Bretton Woods institutions becomes the center of discussion. It is true that economic interest is the main driving force for interactions and integrations throughout history but I believe that the political and cultural developments warrant further evaluation. For example, the success of the French Revolution and its embedded Enlightenment thoughts inspired the colonized people in America and Haiti who later fought for their own independences, leading to new spheres of interactions. It is essential to examine more on other aspects in addition to world economy as the process of integration is complex and not solely economy-determined. Moreover, political and cultural events have a role in shaping how the world economy functions as
The distinctive Revolutions led to an economic revival among its manufactures and solidity. An imposing quantity of political prospects followed from the Revolutions that established rising opportunities as a community.
The similarities between the two’s perspectives regarding the topic are also strikingly similar--adding to the validity and developing a concrete explanation. Each writer has their distinct, personal definition of globalization, however unignorable similarities exist between the

This can be seen through the gradual engagement between Great Britain and America. For example, in Britain a consumer revolution happened. America was able to bask in the glory and financial successes of the motherland and become a more intricate part of Britain’s economy. This increased the mainland colonies as well with their production of agricultural goods.
How was the world interconnected in the early modern period, according to the introduction by Pomeranz & Topik? In what ways did the non-Western “peripheries” still have influence in their economic roles? The world was interconnected in the early modern period by trade. Many different countries traded goods with each other, and adapted different cultures and traditions.
“How does 21st century globalization differ from 20th century globalization?” Globalization heavily implies the opening of local and nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook of an interconnected and interdependent world with free transfer of capital, goods, and services across national frontiers. It also occasionally discusses the less common dimensions of globalization, such as environmental globalization or military globalization . Those dimensions, however, receive much less attention the three described above, as academic literature commonly subdivides globalization into three major areas which are economic globalization, cultural globalization and political globalization. The evolution of globalization is still open for debate according to some scholar’s dates back to Ice Age when people used to travel in search of food, trade and security.
In the late 1980s, globalization theory started to emerge as the new forms of capitalist hegemony appeared (Savage, Bagnall and Longhurst, 2004). Globalization is a process of encouraging closer political, economic, social interaction and break down or reducing the trade barriers between countries (Mittelman, 2000). It can be divided into two main categories: globalization of markets and globalization or production. Globalization of markets is a process of the worldwide market integration and has created a global market place (due to countries are reducing trade barriers). For example, in this 21st century, products that we consume or access are no longer from just one person, company or place but globally as the presence of the global market
Globalization and Nation States Globalization has integrated and intertwined the economies of the world. In the world today, every nation has become independent on every other nation, be it through trade or through finance. The exceptionally notoriety of the word 'globalization’ signals a require for caution. The word was barely utilized some time recently the late 1980s, indeed in scholarly circles, but nowadays you can barely open a daily paper without experiencing the term. It might effortlessly show up to is an elegant name utilized to assign wonders around which one has as it were the vaguest thoughts. However to dispose of the concept of globalization, and the huge consideration agreed the marvels it envelops, on such grounds, would be silly. There is a genuine require for a common, non-specific term to portray the complex, multi sided ways in which the world is inter-connected, and progressively so.
