Globalization, historical and contemporary is a very open concept. Many sides are argued when it comes to globalization when it began, what it has caused and if it is positive or negative on society. All these views make it a difficult concept to discuss because there are so many sides it can be seen from and it is very difficult to find facts because not everyone agrees. Due to the fact that globalization is such an open idea it does allow people to present their own opinion on the matter making all of the material within globalization very exciting to learn about.
Every event in history has made some kind of effect on the world we know today. You have probably heard the phrase in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, well when Columbus found

An article in the economist that focuses on all of the different views of contemporary globalization states that many economists believe it is hard to decide if globalization is good or bad if they do not know when it really began. With this information it is difficult to argue how historical globalization affects us due to the fact that there is no true facts about when historical and contemporary globalization started or ended. It is agreed that contemporary globalization bagan in a time period of great economic change, or when effects of historical globalization truly began to show themselves in positive and negative ways. Contemporary globalization is defined as the last stage of globalization, this is very important because that means it can be seen as a last chance to atone for mistakes in history. Oxford academic considers globalisation the “big bang theory” of human history. A scholar that the article quotes named Adam Smith claims that 1492 (when Columbus found the new world) is one of the most important events in our planet’s history. The reason for this belief is that this is when humans began exchanging information and trading goods. Sadly this event also was the starting piece to the historical legacies still affecting us …show more content…
A legacy of historical globalization depends on whatever choices were made in the past to lead us to our current point. Choices such as the decision of the europeans to cut Africa into sections and begin using the indigenous peoples as slaves has left a legacy that we still can see the affects of today. African american people living in the united states have an unemployment rate of 6.8% compared to the unemployment rate of caucasian people which is 3.7%. The reason for this is that minorities are typically not offered education of the same level compared to majorities, the percentage of african americans who obtain a college degree is just over half of the percentage of white people who obtain a college degree. Another set of shocking statistics is the amount of African American people in each state that are incarcerated due to drug admissions, each state is different but the state with the highest percentage is Illinois, 15% of the states population is African American and 90% of that population have been incarcerated for some sort of drug activity. Next in line on that list is the state of Maryland with an African American population of 27% and an incarceration rate due to drugs of 90%. Elements of the injustice towards African American
The South And The West Three major events that significantly impacted the history of the U.S. were The Civil War, Reconstruction, and Westward Expansion. They shaped what our country is today and what it will become in the future. However, there were several political, social, and economic consequences due to the events.
When I was in elementary and middle school, I was always taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. What I was not taught was the toll it took on the Natives in the Americas. Also, we were not taught about Christopher Columbus’ role before his voyage, such as his slave holdings. I found that article interesting because it gave me information that I was not taught so for in my education. I learned the reason for Columbus’ fame: the Founding Fathers needed a hero.
Globalization has had an impact on just about everywhere in the world, whether it be positive or negative. There have been many benefits and good things that have come out of this international movement. We have more goods, we are more connected, things are easier to do, goods are cheaper, and life values and conditions have improved, but what about the people who don't have access to these benefits? What about the people we don't talk about, the ones who make those cheap goods? For some, many negatives have come out of globalization, like decreased living conditions and isolation, even if in our eyes it seems all good and like we couldn't live without it.
After learning about it in class and researching it on my own, I argue that Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the ‘New World” is the most significant event because, while the eventual discovery of the Americas was inevitable, Columbus’ immediate cruelty towards the Native Americans set the
Some make our world change for better and for worse. We do not make that decision though. The Boston Marathon bombing is an example of a horrific event that happened not to long ago that changed our world today. Just because this event occurred in a certain place does not mean it cannot affect anywhere other than Boston. Not only has it caused us to be more aware of terrorist attacks, but it has also changed a lot of Americans outlook on Muslim countries.
The prison population is overwhelmingly male and disproportionately minority. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that 25% of state prisoners are white, 38% are black and 21% are Hispanic, revealing a degree of disproportion when compared to the general population where 62% are white, 13% are black and 17% are Hispanic. Racial disparity with regards to imprisonment has been a feature of the prison system from decades yet this disparity has increased over time. African Americans today are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 5.1 times the imprisonment of whites. African Americans comprise 31% of individuals arrested for drug violations.
The Atlantic Slave Trade caused many political, social, and economical effects on the US. There are debates over reparations, and whether the confederate flag should be hung up. It also affected the Civil Rights Movement greatly and contributed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and contributed to racism. First of all, what was the Atlantic Slave Trade?
What most people know about 1492 was that America was discovered by Christopher Columbus. That is true and he doesn’t go and deny it. Felipe Fernández-Armesto does discuss of this marvelous event, a fair amount compared to his book about this one event in Amerigo: The Man Who Gave His Name to America. Just like there were probably other events that occurred in 1776 or 2009 as examples, besides for the writing of the Constitution or the stock market crash, respectively. One of the main events
Jaclyn Seigel Doctor Morales PHM2121 30 April 2015 “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” By Michelle Alexander; An Evaluation In “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness” by Michelle Alexander, Alexander explains her opinion on mass incarceration and “The War on Drugs.” Even though “The War on Drugs” took few steps forward to eliminating drug abuse, Michelle Alexander’s book explains how this has created more problems rather than solutions. Alexander focuses on how African American communities have become more vulnerable to the arrests.
Thomas, Deborah and MKC. 2013. Globalization and Race, in Annual Reviews I- Introduction Main point: In the past two decades, anthropologists have put much of their focus on globalization.
The one-hundred-degree, dirty, dust-filled factory room is filled with sickness and exhaustion. It is hour twenty of the work shift, and sleep-deprived employees find three or four hours of rest on the filthy factory floor before they are forced to begin again. During that time, if they fail to meet their quota, ask for a break, or demand that their scarce pay be given to them on time, the workers are assaulted, fired, or imprisoned by supervisors (“The Hidden Face of Globalization”) This Bangladesh factory is filled with young women, working for a multinational corporation headquartered in a World Power that helped establish the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Among these rights, is Article twenty-four declaring that “everyone has a right to rest and leisure” in addition to an appropriate number of days off for holidays and leave (“Universal Declaration of Human Rights”).
Neoliberalism is a political ideology that has become one of the dominant schools of thought in many modern countries, and has therefore become intricately woven into the globalization of society. Globalization is a broad term that refers to the increasing relations between different countries that spans all aspects of life, inclusive of social, political, and economic. It is this increasing sense that these relationships stretch across borders of specific countries that helps to create more global citizens as opposed to national citizens (Steger 15). With the governments of countries becoming increasingly involved with one another, and with neoliberalism being so present in these countries political ideologies, it makes sense that neoliberalism would play a vital role in current globalization. By examining some of the main tenants of neoliberalism philosophy, and through studying concrete examples, we can see how they have been influential in shaping modern routes of globalization, while also taking into consideration that this may not be inherently good by examining pushback.
Globalization has its bad sides but is not all bad, it has lead to a greater trade network between countries and has saved lives by spreading information, medicine, clean water and food. But it also has its major down sides like outsourcing resulting in lower prices for goods but lost jobs for developed countries and poor paying, miserable jobs for developing countries. So, overall i think that globalization is good in some ways but In the past and present it has affected many people
In today’s world, where we are all given more and more access to other cultures through social media, television, the internet, and easier travel has advanced globalization at an exponential rate. I think back to my high school days and remember the isolation I experienced. I grew up in Bosnia, and we didn’t have the access to the outside world that the youth in the United States enjoyed. I mean, my town seriously had one computer, and it was more of a communistic show piece than anything else. I see my children reaching out and maintaining relationships with not only my family, but with foreign exchange students they’ve met in school, or friends they’ve made while visiting their grandparents in Europe.
The aim of this assessment is to reflect on what I have learned this semester regarding the module of Business in Global Context; from the lectures with the professor, the case studies done in class and the three previous patchworks that we worked on. We have learned that there are different internal and external components that affect the business environment, from corporate social responsibility to cultural and institutional framework; organizations must take into consideration all the factors related to the different parts of its environment. For the topic discussion, I will be discussing globalization and how it has affected the global business environment along with the key aspects and the different point of views regarding it.
