How the Cultural Turn has allowed music to be transformed into oral histories: music about migration and the borderland between the USA and Mexico from the album Border Song Introduction This essay will explain how the cultural turn has affected the study of migration through the advent of music. The cultural turn was a movement in the 1980s and 90s that changed how geography is studied (Eyerman, 2004). This has allowed for a much broader range of topics to be researched through a geographical lens, such as identity, race, gender, sexuality, and intersectionality, that take a more human-focused approach rather than just a physical one (Jacobs and Spillman, 2005).
During the late 1900’s, an aesthetic movement known as primitivism integrated itself into Modern art. African and Pacific Island motifs, fetishes, and design elements were adopted into the work of Modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Moore.19 The rise in popularity of these primitive inspired artworks helped to influence Black Americans in investigating and reconnecting with their own cultural heritage.20 One of the concerns facing Black Americans was how to merge the heritage of their ancestors with being an American. In the narratives, one finds references to blacks listening to white music and, as just noted, whites listening to black music. One can also find a few references to whites teaching blacks how to play an instrument, mostly the fiddle,” in this quote, Robert b. Winens highlights how the interaction between two different cultures can pose different sides. Although learning about and respecting other cultures is valuable, especially in the hopes of gaining a better understanding and creating community, this usually fails to be the case between African American and white cultures.
While my thesis focuses on the music that was popular in vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley roughly between 1880 and 1930, it is necessary to look further back at the history of the music and socio-political state that Irish immigrants and Irish-Americans had faced in first coming to America. The Irish started emigrating to North America
However, Selena stuck to her roots and implemented her culture into her music, making her indeed a success. A big part of her culture, dancing, helped her even become more famous. She was the first to introduce “charisma and choreography into Texas-Mexican music”(Joseph 329). While most Latin artists just sung on stage, Selena made Tejano performances entertaining by dancing, twisting, and creating steps to dance to (López 15). A role that made her exceptionally influential was how she introduced “pop, rock, rap, dance and mariachi concepts into Tejano music”(Joseph 330).
