There were many factory jobs, however, no one to stand up for the workers. So of course people will turn to their government for help, the power house of the country. However, even the government was picky in what they helped with.

The Progressivism included both major political parties, it lasted about 20 years. Many large reforms were being debated and fixed during this time period of hard times. There were 3 major reforms that were included in this movement. These reforms were contradicted and underestimated, but some people thought otherwise.

I was very intrigued when I started researching about these four progressive reforms. Some things I found out were atrocious and the others just plain out disgusting. The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). There were many major reforms in the Progressive Era that altered and advanced American society.

From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.
The Progressive movement was caused corruption in politics, political machines, rapid urbanization and discrimination and equality. The Progressive movement was based on the idea that the government should have a more active role in solving economic ills. The Progressives wanted to promote child labor laws, improve the efficiency of government, expand democracy and promote social justice. The Progressives believed in progression. As in progression into a fairer society.
Reformers successfully addressed the unacceptable worker and consumer issues, and they helped regulate big businesses and the economy with anti-trust laws and government regulation agencies. They addressed social problems such as prostitution, alcoholism, birth control, and crime, and they helped conserve natural resources. Plus, reformers helped provide free healthcare and public education. Health and sanitation regulations were also created and overseen as a result of the reformers, as were factory safety regulations, labor laws, and child labor laws. They formed pressure groups that demanded a democratic government at all levels.
