There are several things that can result in floods. Rain, obviously, but believe it or not, droughts can, too. A drought is a long period of dry weather, especially one injurious to crops. Droughts can result in floods because during prolonged spells, especially, they will deplete the ground’s source of water, leaving the top layer extraordinarily dry. Then, when it rains, that top layer acts as a natural barrier, preventing the water from soaking in.
Also, there are cut banks where larger sediments are eroded due to the stronger currents. The Missoula flood was caused by deglaciation of glacial lake Missoula at the end of the previous ice age when the dams broke. It flooded Eastern Washington, specifically where the Spokane river is located. Glacial outburst flood deposits dumped much gravel and eroded basalt rocks into what we see today, such as the Bowl and the Pitcher.
With the increased rainfall, groundwater was rising and being enriched with carbon dioxide due to the high level in the soil. The air at this time, also was enriched with carbon dioxide. As the carbon dioxide evolved, it turned the water into carbonic acid and traveled into joints in the limestone. The Earth’s crust is always flexing and bending, which is why we see so much movement.
