What happens when you go to college for a completely different job than the one you are applying for? How do you gain the experience you need to compete in the finance industry?

In my case, I went to school to become a Social Studies teacher. However, I spent a few years looking for a teaching job. During a job search, I could be going up against 300-400 individuals for one job. Now, I thoroughly enjoyed teaching, but I made the difficult decision to leave that part of my life behind and move on to another passion of mine, which is finance.
