Gold mining or mining in general has always been the backbone of South Africa’s economy. Gold was first discovered in 1886 on the Witwatersrand Basin. This discovery made history and led to a massive economic boom. As more people found out about this discovery, more and more men from South Africa and abroad moved to the city in order to work in mines and earn income wherever gold was found, a mine would be opened. This transformed South Africa from an agricultural country to the world’s largest producer of gold. Transport and equipment that is being used in the mines releases a lot of unhealthy gases to the atmosphere and the surrounding. These are the explosive when in contact with oxygen (O2), colourless, tasteless odourless methane (CH4). Again according to the USminedisasters.com 520 of the 864 mine disasters listed have been from methane explosion. Working mines who have been moving to places near the West Rand mines inhale the poisonous gas, carbon monoxide (CO) on a daily dose for the duration of working hours. This is because gold mines mostly use diesel equipment underground where there are carbon monoxide is available in small quantities which are dangerous because these quantities cannot eliminate easily when in the …show more content…

We are able to mine many different minerals like gold, nickel, and silver. Gold can be found in greenstone belt; they have found over US $192 Billion and most of that gold was given to Fort Knox, and some of it was sold to jewelery store all across the Canadian Shield. Also,
Giant mine: social impacts and remediation Over the fifty-four years of operation, Giant Mine produced over seven million ounces of gold worth a massive two billion dollars. Located just outside Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Giant Mine, mined and processed gold, which entailed several processes that leaves behind a very toxic chemical dust called arsenic trioxide (Sandlos, J., & Keeling, 2012). However, with many growing cities, recourse extraction was the most beneficial way to turn what they had into money. Mining can provoke serious change within a community; while this can help fund local infrastructure such as building roads and schools, mining will always leave the land devastated when the resource runs dry. Before Giant Mine was

The possibility of causing an explosion is so high that Laskas was forbidden from bringing her tape recorder down into the mines where any coal was exposed or any methane was leaking. Laskas states that you’re constantly aware of the “confinement, the lack of light, the very real worry about the roof caving in or the air supply shutting off or something blowing up” (Laskas 19). These coal miners risk the possibility of something malfunctioning, acting up, and ending their lives completely just so us Americans can turn on our TVs and hair dryers every day. Further into the novel, there is Traffic, the chapter regarding air traffic controllers.
In 1871 British Columbia joined confederation and was the 6th province to be apart of the country known as “Canada”. “On July 20, 1871, British Columbia entered Confederation as our sixth province, extending the young Dominion of Canada to the Pacific Ocean.” (http://www.canadahistoryproject.ca/1871/ ) One of the main reasons B.C. was able to join Canada, was because of the Fraiser River Gold Rush. Gold has always been a beloved and highly sought after commodity. Even the word gold brings people running to get their hands on it due to their greed and the power and money associated with gold. Prior to 1848 though, whenever gold was obtained, it was directly given to the king, pharaoh, czar, or the ruler of the nation in which the gold was discovered. The people would dig and dig for the gold and be rewarded with nothing. Then, on January 24, 1848, James Marshall struck gold, and this time there was nobody demanding they get their hands on it.
The discovery of gold also brought new technology and industry. Gold miners needed more efficient tools and equipment to mine gold, so machine-building and transportation
The negative results of mining proves that it posed a threat towards Canada’s environment. The mine wastes were deposited along the 620 stretch of the river, leading to great loss of animal life and vegetation. The pollution is regarded as the most destructive environmental disaster. The main type of depletion at the mine is the loss of minerals and other natural resources such as vegetation. Compare and contrast the views of (a) an ecological ethic, (b) Blackstone's ethic of environmental rights, and (c) a utilitarian ethic of pollution control.
