The Philippines is known by the world as the 8th largest rice producer and is responsible for 2.8 of the global rice production. Rice is a very important part of a huge part of the world's population. Given this piece of information alone, it says that the Philippines is fully capable of sustaining its own in terms of rice production but why is it that most of the country suffers hunger and would also need to import rice? Perhaps it has nothing to do with the production at all but with the composition of the rice itself. Is it giving enough nutrients to the people? Studies support the fact that majority of Filipinos suffer from different major diseases specially Vitamin A Deficiency. Recently, a group of organizations, both local and international, …show more content…
Researchers found out that Golden Rice can prevent certain medical diseases. Several methods have been put into action over the years in severely affected countries to help in preventing major diseases. There are programs to increase the availability of Vitamin A in foods by supplementing or enriching them. Programs to distribute Vitamin A supplements have been also been implemented. Both of these programs work to an extent, but are not completely effective. For those foods that are rich in Vitamin A like bio-fortified, the price may be too high to allow access by the very poor, who need it most. Golden rice yields a rice crop that has high levels of beta-carotene, giving a ‘golden’ color. The beta-carotene is then converted by the human body into Vitamin A. This crop is not only for the wealthy people but also for the poor …show more content…
This malnutrition affects more than two billion humans, predominantly women and children. In infants and young children even mild anemia can impair intellectual development. Anemia in pregnancy is an important cause of maternal mortality, increasing the risk of hemorrhage and sepsis during childbirth. Infants born to anemic mothers often suffer from low birth weight and anemia themselves. Consequences are millions of birth-related deaths of mothers and children. It impairs physical and intellectual development, the immune system, and general fitness of people of all ages. An inadequate dietary iron intake is the main cause of IDA. While Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) also affects people all over the world. The most common affected people are those in countries where access to Vitamin A rich foods. Vitamin A deficiency most severely affects young children, where it is needed for correct and enough development, and pregnant women, where Vitamin A stores are expended. In this case the researcher found out the technique used to make Golden Rice, along with the prevalence of different diseases that can be prevented. In the remainder of this paper, the researcher expand on these topics along with the public’s view of Golden rice and gives some reason to implement and spread this study to help the country to survive from vitamin A deficiency and other
Assignment #3 Two vitamins that I do not meet the guidelines for daily consumption from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are vitamins A and D, which are both fat-soluble vitamins. The primary function of vitamin A is maintaining the function of the cells that line the lungs, stomach, urinary tract and bladder, intestines, vagina, vision, skin and immune function. Having a low intake of vitamin A could increase my risk of vision problems such as age related macular degeneration due an inadequate amount of carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotenes. The recommended amount for me according the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) for Vitamin A-RAE is 700 mcg and for my weekly average I consumed 279.2. If this vitamin is taken in excess it can have harmful effects such as liver toxicity and birth defects.
Michael Pollan’s article “Escape from the Western Diet” has provided the knowledge on effects of consumption of western diets which is mostly a processed food and the benefits of consuming a wholesome food which is farm fresh. In contrast, David Freedman’s article “How junk food can End Obesity” compares the nutrition level and healthiness of wholesome and processed food and also discusses the obesity issues and how to tackle it through the proper diet. According to pollan, the nutritionist or scientist published many theories on food which leads to chronic diseases, but such theories are not used to make a healthy diet, instead it has used by food industry and medical community to improve their profit margin. Pollan suggested that to prevent
Those crops are typically the main ingredients in cheap, processed foods. However, for farmers who choose not to contract with large corporations or decide to grow healthy foods instead, which are usually ineligible for government policies, are one disaster away from poverty. Increased malnutrition is caused by poor diversification of diets such as relying too much on starchy staples. Thus, the consumption of a variety of foods is important for positive health. Malnutrition can be reduced by the consumption of diets having animal sources, vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables as well as nutrient-rich legumes (Arimond and Ruel, 2004; Thompson and Amoroso, 2011). According to the FAO, IFAD and WFP, (2015) about 800 million people do not have sufficient access to calories. A low intake of vitamins and minerals causes about 2 billion people all over the world to suffer from micronutrient malnutrition (IFPRI, 2014).
