In the story, The Hobbit, Thorin is in charge of a group of 13 dwarves. Thorin is a powerful, tough, and intelligent leader. Throughout the book, Thorin likes to go to other people to help him make decisions and help the other dwarves win their mission. On this mission, they are trying to gain their treasure back from the stealing, thief, Smaug the dragon. The whole situation brings up lots thinking if Thorin is actually a good leader in being in charge of the dwarves, helping them get back their treasure. While Thorin has been a leader, do his bad acts reflect on his death towards the end of the story? Throughout most of the story, Thorin shows multiple signs that he is brave, while Thorin is leading the other dwarves, he is also a dwarf
Where are you from, fairytale land? BILBO Look, if you don’t know where Thorin is, I need to go find him. KHAN I’ll made you a deal.
He heroically rescued them from their cells and had the genius idea to sail down the river, saving them from the Elven King. Bilbo also bravely entered Smaug’s cave first even though he had no idea what he would encounter. Lastly, Bilbo, unbeknownst to Thorin, gave over the
J.R.R Tolkien uses the Hero’s archetype to give details about the character of Bilbo Baggins by characterizing him during this stage. During this stage, Bilbo Baggins is described as a brave and bold hobbit. Page 157-173 of the book displays Bilbo’s brave actions while he follows the elvenking and rescues the dwarves. In this situation, we can see that Bilbo decided to take a chance and save the dwarves. When faced with a death situation, most hobbits would hide in fear.
Thorin comments that if more of the contentious warriors of the world lived the way hobbits do, it would be a happier world, and Bilbo’s return to Hobbiton seems an acknowledgment of the same idea. Heroism is important in a world beset with evil, but Tolkien suggests that if everyone lived the simple life of hobbits, evil would be obsolete. So, in a sense, Bilbo does belong in Hobbiton, even if he does not in the eyes of the hobbit community. 3 Is Thorin in any sense a heroic leader? Do his actions in the novel make him deserving of his death at the end?
Leadership in Antigone Lao Tzu once said, "To lead people, walk behind them." A good leader is one who understands and wants the best for their people. They will listen and guide but not dictate and order around. In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, Creon is created to show a clearly evident difference between a good leader and a bad leader.
Besides his family ancestry and his skill, Thorin showed tons of courage throughout the story. When the dwarves were taken by the goblins into their kingdom, Thorin was in the lead. He showed that he wasn’t afraid of the Goblins. He wasn’t scared of anything throughout the entire journey. He showed that he wasn’t afraid of Smaug.
In this film, a party of dwarves is on a quest to salvage the wealth of their kin. Bilbo is a hobbit that is joining them on their journey of riches. He is the hero of the pack. He initially helped the dwarves by using his mystical ring to help fight the giant spiders: The dwarves went off the path they were supposed to be on.
Thorin, reluctantly, arranged to stay in Rivendell, with some help from Gandalf. When we got to Rivendell, Thorin asked the guards if he could speak with someone. The next moment, three elves walked out of the castle, or whatever it was. I
Michael Shermer, a science writer and historian of science said, “Humans are pattern-seeking story-telling animals, and we are quite adept at telling stories about patterns, whether they exist or not.” In J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, the main protagonist, joins a group of dwarves to recover their lost, forgotten gold from Smaug the dragon. Joseph Campbell’s A Hero with a Thousand Faces, he states that many legendary heros follow a pattern in their adventures. Matthew Winkler has his own ideas of the heroic quest pattern, stating the hero's follow a pattern of eleven stages. Both The Hobbit and the heroic journey have similar elements with departure, initiation and then return.
Bilbo Baggins the Burglar Thesis: In the book The Hobbit, the character Bilbo Baggins is a middle class hobbit who must challenged his introverted nature to help the dwarves reclaim their land. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, who lives in his hobbit hole. Hobbits are generally short and fat introverted people who don’t leave their house much. Bilbo Baggins was living like that, until one day, thirteen dwarves and his old wizard friend(Gandalf) enter his house and start eating and talking like it was their house.
The story Beowulf contains many different rulers that people follow. Among the various characteristics these men share, a few great qualities shine through, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. The leader Beowulf portrays these qualities multiple times throughout the story, which define him as a model of leadership for all times. One of the reasons is that Beowulf always acts decisively and courageously to combat evil, and he is also noble in his actions. He knows how to create peace as well as to wage war.
In the previous essay regarding the meaning of a Biblical hero, the word “hero” is never truly defined. Rather, the essay explores the three pinnacle qualities a hero must not have. These three title-stripping characteristics were the possession of hate for their enemies and lack of discernment. Thus, if a person, elf, dwarf, or hobbit does have these qualities, then they are not a hero. The prior essay leaves no definition for what qualified someone as a hero if they pass the preliminary character test.
Bilbo was a big part of his success in getting his treasure back but Thorin was blinded by his greed. Thorin demonstrates how greed has taken him over when Bard and the Elvenking come to get a 1/12 share of the treasure. Thorin responded saying “ But nothing will we give, not even a loafs worth, under a threat of force (Tolkien 224).” Thorin has been dominated by greed. Bard the man that killed Smaug, is the reason he can safely get to his treasure but cannot share his spoils with him.
The effects of leadership throughout our timeline in this world have had a major toll on how we shape our lives today. We have many types of leadership like democracy, theocracy, and many more. We see these types of leadership in the poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney. In the epic the main kings are Hrothgar who is a generous and a natural leader of the Danes, and Beowulf who is known as a noble and loyal king of the Geats. Both of these kings went through many events that had many different impacts on them and they succeeded.
In fact, Gloin says, "As soon as I clapped my eyes on the little fellow bobbing and puffing on the mat, I had my doubts" (Tolkien 18). On the other hand, Bilbo didn't trust the dwarves, nor did he want to go on the quest. To illustrate, Bilbo says "As soon as I saw your funny faces on the door-step, I had my doubts" (Tolkien 19). Over time the dwarves and Bilbo start to trust and respect each other more. For example, in chapter nine the book says that Thorin "...began to have a very high
