Manners and etiquette are rules that a society says we should follow. Standard of good manners differs from countries to countries, but one thing is common to all that is to show respect and reverence to people. In daily life, we have several conversations with people around us and through those, we can recognize the enormous differences between good manners and bad manners. Manners express through every action we take, no matter how it is small or unimportant. Good manners refers to polite, humble, courteous, respectful and well-cultured social behavior, which is strongly depended on the tradition and background of families. Good manners are not only to talk politely or refinedly, but the full meaning of good manner includes many things: the way to eat and drink, the way to fulfill social regulations, or even the way to express attitude towards others, and many more. “Manners, Morals, Customs, and Public Perception,” by Judge Paul Heath Till is an essay reflecting on the Southern culture Till grew up with and how it is slowly conforming to today’s Northern society. Till asserts that the simple courteousness that had set the standard for Southern behavior has been diminished and targeted by the media and egalitarian America. He argues that this process must not only cease, but that Southern culture should instead be adopted into American society. Till’s diction and point of view suggest a condescending tone and bias against Northern culture, minimizing the reliability of his argument.
He always greets people with “good morning” or always makes sure that he makes it clear to them, that he means no offence by any of his words. This is a low level of courtesy that is in a direct form. But of all his example, courtesy is best seen in the third part of the story.
Barbara Ehrenreich describes to us what she believes today’s world thinks about the definition of civility. Her purpose is to argue about the misconception of civility. She believes that “competitive gratitude” is not what having etiquette is about and that it is absolutely absurd to be forced into fake politeness. Ehrenreich uses satire and irony to clearly differentiate between civility and unnecessary flattery. In her second sentence, Ehrenreich uses the oxymoron “heck-no” and “with all due respect” together to mock the critics that claim that America needs a little more civility.
In America’s society today there are many basic commandments that we must follow such as Southern hospitality. Young children use their manners when they are in the presence of their elders, men being gentlemen to women, don’t take another person’s life, uses common courtesy, listen to people that you look up to, and also the golden rule do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Why are the commandments so important in today’s society? Southern hospitality is helping people without asking for their kindness. For example being welcoming and having a pleasant spirit such as when people visit your home, helping the less fortunate at the homeless shelters.
Well etiquette is a code of behavior or courtesy based on rules of a polite society while manners are socially correct ways of acting. To Respect or to be a Kiss Up “Treat others the way you want to be treated. ” We’ve all heard that overused phrase growing up. The same goes for me as well, and to me, respect has been a huge part of my culture and many other Asian cultures. Respect is the root of what makes people who they are today. It shows that you admire them, that you care for them, or possibly even fear them.

Respect is one of the revered and more important values that Native Americans still live by today. Because they hold a significant place in Lakota society, special respect is to be given to elders.
