For more than twenty years, my mother has been working as a financial accounting expert in Vietnam. Throughout my adolescence, as her position became more and more senior, she had to deal with enormous amount of work that often meant she had to work late into the night. Consequently, I volunteered to be her little assistant in the evening by simply copying data into books as well as rechecking calculations to check for errors. This basic training with my mother was my very first exposure to accounting and finance. As the years rolled on, I learnt a great many more fundamental financial terms, but more importantly, developed a comprehensive understanding of the symmetry of numbers, of what makes accounting and finance a career path I want to follow. Something slowly began to dawn on me, I realised that financial works had become my passion ever since. …show more content…
From the very first day of school, I demonstrated tremendous mathematical potential with a curiosity and desire to solve challenging problems which made me really excited. I was usually ranked as one of the top mathematics student in my class, taking part in mathematical competitions at regional and national levels. After successfully completing my 10th Grade in Vietnam, my parents rewarded me with a two-year A–Level Course in the United Kingdom. I have chosen subjects that I believe are beneficial to my higher education curriculum. By taking mathematics and further mathematics, I have enhanced my analytical skills through various advanced problem solving activities. I was chosen for the UKMT Maths Challenge Team in which our school achieved the 4th place with the second highest score. I am part of the Maths Challenge Club which has been a rewarding experience for me as my mathematical skills have
For the past four years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic pursuit of quality work in the legal system. While in college I pursuit a criminal justice major with the intention to go to law school after graduating. I dreamed of becoming a lawyer since I was a young girl. However, during my senior year of college, I felt perplexed of my future, was not sure if I wanted to continue pursuing this old dream that I once thought it was my goal in life. Like most graduating seniors, I was not sure of what I wanted to do with my degree once I attain it.
My Academics at Oberlin: I am attracted to Oberlin as it has a strong Mathematical Economics Concentration program. At Oberlin, I am considering to explore the intersections of Economics and Mathematics. That said, the classes I am going to take will not be limited to only these areas. In addition to economics and programming, I would like to explore other subjects as well. I don’t want to lose sight of all the other things that will make me a well-rounded individual.
Art is an incredibly versatile tool that can be useful to all other fields, without it, we wouldn't be the technologically and scientifically advanced society that we are. It has helped explore and depict the human body, and better understand the human mind through observing the way we use and interpret art pieces, therefore contributing greatly to biology and psychology. It is also to artists creative minds and keen understanding of space that we owe our most impressive architectural structures along with our first maps and depictions of our world, important contributions to geography, history and sociology. Most importantly, visual arts are also necessary and present in all cultures to express and share our different visions of this world,
While doing my undergraduate studies in Psychology I got the opportunity to meet many great professors that helped me to become the graduate student I am today. During my first year in The University of Puerto Rico I took an advanced literature course with a brilliant professor that could analyze any story in a manner that was not only understandable but also interesting. I was mesmerized, but not by her knowledge but by the teaching methodology she employed to project that knowledge. I ended up taking three more courses with her that led to the development of a great friendship that I cherish to this day. Throughout my undergraduate years I had the privilege of meeting several professors just like her that influenced my personal and professional
Mathematics is a subject that captivates my interests because of its beauty, logic and uniqueness. Through the history of mankind, mathematics has played a crucial role in the development of our daily life as explains Professor Marcus du Sautoy in “The Story of Maths”. It was from this documentary, along with “The Joy of X”, by Michael Miller that my interest in Mathematics began to emerge in year 10 as both answered the question “When will I ever use this in real world?” In year 11, I became fascinated by Mathematics.
I grew up multicultural, my parents immigrated from China and I’ve spent most of my life living here. My life has been a hybridization of the two cultures and growing up I’ve always been very aware of their differences. The idea that a person’s life is heavily influenced by their background has always interested me. Someone’s background affects their upbringing, the development of their values and interests. The realization that changing a person’s cultural heritage has the potential to change how they live their life fascinates me and also presents me with a challenge.
I come from a family of six. In total we’re three sisters and a brother, and then of course, my parents. I truly respect my parents for providing us with everything we needed like support, praise for our achievements no matter how small, and encouragement to pursue activities. It was because of them and my older siblings that I became proud of reading books for fun, writing for myself, and drawing to express my ideas. My hobbies became my strength for projects.
The University of Michigan offers an abundance of opportunities and classes in many fields, and I am especially appealed by those in the LSA Department of Psychology. I am interested in taking courses in Cognitive Development and Developmental Psychology, which cover topics regarding child development, emotions, and knowledge. Moreover, I hope to have the opportunity to meet Dr. Shelly Schreier, whose expertise overlaps with my academic focus, as I want to study the social behavior of children and childhood brain development. I am also attracted to the diverse selection of resources offered, especially those relating to global study and public service. I like to take an in-depth approach to learning, and I hope to fulfill this aspiration by getting involved in the many global study opportunities available to undergraduates.
Statement Of Purpose- “Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self- confidence”. Great are the words of Mark Twain and true in my career. Throughout my career, I was always ready to learn new things and bring out best results. I am a studious person from my childhood and had a good and consistent career graph throughout my school life.
It is at the urging of my undergraduate advisor—and Harvard alum—Bethany Nelson that I am submitting this application to you. It is her belief, and mine as well, that my academic record and career goals are a perfect match for the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and more specifically, the Specialized Program. I know that you will agree. In 1999, I was valedictorian of my class at Avon High School.
I led a team of fellow students in a science and engineering challenge competing against several other schools in South Derbyshire. On top of winning first prize I was also awarded a Silver CREST award as recognition for the time and effort that I dedicated to the project. As well as being a prefect I was given a role in the pupil leadership team working closely with the senior leadership team helping to bridge the communication gap between pupils and faculty. Additionally I volunteered to be a games maker at the Derbyshire school games. I worked with other volunteers to deliver coached sessions of boccia to children with learning disabilities, which was an extremely gratifying
