Good afternoon Dr. Weitz, faculty and staff, family and friends, and my fellow students. It is my honor to be standing before you as your 2017 graduation speaker. During my time at Reading Area Community College I could interact with so many of you through classes, Campus Life and the Leadership Institute. I found that we are a very diverse group of people. We all came from different walks of life. As I stand before you I am the voice of many of those paths. I am a single mother and a returning student. I am a working adult and a night student. I am a first-generation college graduate and a student leader. One way or another we all made it to this point in our lives. We overcame obstacles and set goals. My twins Maximus and Jocelynn had reached the age where they understood what do you want to be when you grow up and what college was. They came to me one day after school and asked me if they had to go to college when they got older. Of course, like any parent would, I said yes you need to go to college and explained the reasons why but in the back of my mind there was this nagging thought telling me “how can you tell them that they should go to college when you never finished yourself? How can you expect them to do something that you're not willing to do yourself?” It was at that exact moment I knew that I needed to fix my mistake. It was now the time for me to stop living in the past and stop making excuses. It was at that moment I knew that I needed to go back to college. That night after I put my kids to bed I went online and applied to RACC. It didn't really hit me until I got the welcome letter in the mail that I was doing this.
