Emphasis through Reinforcement
Grammatical Presentation based on the book “Therapy” by David Lodge
- Introduction:
“Therapy” is written as a dramatic monologue. Its language is very lively, often informal, spoken British English. Reinforcement is a feature of colloquial style whereby some item is repeated for purposes of emphasis, focus or thematic arrangement. It is achieved in the following ways:
1. Merely repetition of a word or phrase:

I agree with every word you 've said – every single word.
This is a long hard day for everyone, especially for Hal. He 's totally in command, totally responsible. (p.75)
2. In loose and informal speech, a reinforcing or recapitulatory pronoun is sometimes inserted within a clause where it stands referring to an initial or final noun phrase:
a. The emphasized noun phrase is fronted:
This man I was telling you about – well, he used to live next door to me.
The book I lent you – have you read it yet?
These two examples show a complete noun phrase being disjoined from the sentence and its role (subject in first sentence, object in the second) is performed by a subsequent pronoun.
Thus the main theme of the utterance is given first.
These young people who beg and sleep rough on the streets of London, they bother me. (p. 53)
b. The emphasized phrase is informally added after the completion of a clause structure which contains a coreferential
When it comes to making the audience feel the same emotions as the speaker, one must be able to use words that add emotional emphasis.

One example of one important action that develops to reveal the theme is in the beginning of the story. For example, in one scene Carly decides she needs the Taker to be able to get a better grade on the SAT. One important quote from this scene is when the author writes, “for better or worse, I made up my mind” (62). This is important in helping to reveal the theme because Carly thinks she can not ace this test. Her parents and friends thinks she can because all school year she she has high grades and is a smart child.
In addition to the rhetorical strategies discussed above, other factors contribute to the success of Sachs and Gilbert's talks. One of these factors is their delivery style. Both approaches are effective in their way, as they reflect the speakers' personalities and help to establish a connection with the audience. Furthermore, both speakers also use visual aids to support their

I think that if repetition is done correctly that it can enhance a reader's experience. This could be used as an emphasis to really draw a point into the reader, but I feel that this should be done in a different way than how repetition was presented in Gilgamesh. Many times,
