Differences of American and Greek Cuisine The Greek diet was very healthy compared to the modern American diet. For example, Greeks use honey instead of sugar in their deserts. While in the American diet, they used sugar in their deserts instead. Greeks even have their own traditional salad called the horitaki. The Greeks eat in a different way than most Americans, who sometimes eat junk food everyday. There are several differences between Greek and American eating customs. One difference between the Greek and American cuisine is Greeks generally eat their “important meal” in the middle of the day, instead of the morning. The Greek tradition is to begin with a small breakfast of a beverage and a sweet bread or pastry. They may pick up a mid-morning snack, a sesame-covered bread ring called a koulouri, from a vendor on the street. Unlike Americans, Americans usually wake up to a big meal for breakfast. Eating and drinking has always been an important part of Greek hospitality. Even in poor villages, guests are welcomed with something sweet to eat, a cup of strong coffee and a glass of cold water.
