Greek’s began emigrating to America in the 1800’s in hopes of greater opportunity. With family at the center of every Greeks life they are very family oriented and often times have large families with multiple generations living under one roof. Searching for new challenges, immigrants found work in an array of fields such as coal miners, shoe shiners, and grocery markets. As entrepreneurs, the emigrant life was often a difficult road. With relatives starving and poor in their homeland, Greeks worked hard, not only for a better life for themselves and their families here in America, but also, for their relatives back home. Parents sacrificed on behalf of their children, in hopes that their children would be able to obtain a better education.

Immigrants face a great deal of hardship on coming to America. Many of these immigrants were on uneducated and fell into the trap of Robber Barons. During the Great Migration (1880-1921) about 56% of the immigrants migrated to the United States not knowing what to expect. Therefore, when coming to America many of the defenseless immigrants had to pay a price. “The shipping industry guarantee good profit, but they had to send their children which caused their family to be separated, this was because these immigrants did not have enough money to have them and their children going together” ( Morgan Prezi).
Many people migrated west for many reasons during the 1800's. Some of these reasons were government sponsored and others were not. Some examples of government sponsored reasons include the Homestead Acts, Mexican War, and the Gadsden Purchase. Some nongovernment sponsored reasons include the Gold Rush, and the Mormons. The Homestead Acts was one of the first reasons for westward expansion.

The newcomers helped transform American society and culture, demonstrating that diversity, as well as unity, is a source of national strength. When the immigrants have arrived in America they were treated differently. Not only to immigrants who have come to America but also slaves that were already in America or were being shipped from one place another that might have been out of the United States.
INTRODUCTION An Italian immigrant once said, "I came to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold. When I got here, found out three things: First, the streets weren't paved with gold; second, they weren't paved at all: and third, I was expected to pave them” (Immigrant). The 1930s in America were a time of hardship for the many migrant workers immigrating to America. During this time, many immigrants wanted to come to America for better job opportunities and for a better life in general.
The United States experienced an influx of immigrants between the 1890’s to the 1920’s. Immigrants entered the United States from Eastern Europe and Southern Europe. From these demographic shifts we can also see that there were changed in the United States attitudes towards recent immigrants. These attitudes are grounded in racialized notions of foreign peoples and African Americans. Nativist notions are set in ideas of whiteness and different factors make Eastern Europe and Southern Europe immigrants not quite white.
The Second Industrial Revolution presented many hardships to immigrants looking for a better life in America. In his book, The Uprooted, Oscar Handlin makes the case for immigrants enduring the hardships adjusting to the American culture and economy. His argument is supported by specific statistics and events that damaged these people. These newcomers’ ideas, beliefs, and cultures were affected as well. Immigrants faced with American culture and commerce had to adjust their own in order to survive.

In the course book on page 612, it mentions how in 1888, more than half a million Europeans landed in America. New York City accounted for 75 percent of them.
Greek life allows for a “learning curve that leads us to adult life” that people in this age range may not be ready for. Being in a Greek organization allows for members to hold leadership positions where they may gain experience for jobs in their future. Holding a position in the greek community calls for a growth in skills of time management, responsibility, and organization. In a survey conducted by Gallup more than 30,000 college students were “more likely to be "thriving" in their well-being and engaged at work than college graduates who did not go Greek”. Most immigrants who came to the U.S had high expectations that they would find wealth but once they arrived they realized their expectations weren’t what they expected. Although, they were disappointed in not finding wealth the conditions in which the U.S was in by the late 1800s were still a lot better than the places they all had left behind to come. The majority of the immigration population anticipation was to find profitable jobs and opportunities. When the large numbers of immigration were migrating to the U.S, it was during the “Gilded Age”, which was the prime time for the country’s expansion of industrialization. Old immigrants from Western Europe entered the country prominently in the 1880’s. But from the 1890’s to the outbreak of World War I, New Immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe flooded the country. These immigrants, bringing with them lesser-practiced customs and religions that could shape the culture of America, mainly congregated with people of similar nationalities in ethnic neighborhoods in the growing cities, thus limiting their assimilation into American society. Another factor limiting the influence of immigration on America was the resistance of the “native” Americans to the New Immigrants.
Immigration into the “land of opportunity” was everything but a smooth, trouble-free journey for those escaping the terror, poverty and political persecution in their crumbling countries. The wave of immigrants was at its peak during the breakouts of economic depressions (Document A). The new flow of immigration doubled the American population, especially in major cities. Chasing after the American Dream, many Europeans were attracted by the employment openings and new chances they could obtain in America. However, despite their life being better than before, these immigrants still faced many obstacles and cultural conflicts trying to fit in and thrive in American culture.
For many Greek immigrants, living and working conditions were difficult in the United States as well. Many boys and young men shined shoes for a living. The pay for this position was miniscule and the young males often only had access to a bed for one eight-hour shift
In the 1800’s many Irish Immigrants were in search of jobs in America. In Ireland jobs were becoming very scarce because there were many problems in their economy. It was important for individuals to support their families because of this occurrence. In Ireland there was an outbreak of the “Potato Blight” a disease caused by eating contaminated potatoes. Because of this many individual lost jobs this cause the “Great Potato Famine.
