February 10, 2018 HOFSTEDE VALUE ORIENTATION THEORY Hofstede theory came about from a Dutch researcher named Greet Hofstede. He studies are mostly in the area of intercultural studies. Intercultural, simply means something taking place between different cultures. Geert Hofstede defines culture as the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from others. Culture, a small word but yet with various definitions, can simply be defined as the way of life of people. Cultural differences can be a major barrier in communication especially in business manner. Cultures that are high on the masculinity scale generally have more prominent differences between genders and tend to be more competitive and ambitious. Societies that don’t really pay attention to this have fewer differences between genders rather believe in equality, places a higher value on relationship building. Long term orientation describes the inclination of a society toward search for virtue, sees time as linear and looks to the future rather than the present or the past. It is goal oriented, values rewards, planning, foresight and perseverance are valued. Short term orientation pertains to those societies that are strongly inclined toward the establishment of the absolute truth. Short term-oriented cultures value traditional methods, take a considerable amount of time to build relationships. These societies live for today. Lifestyle in AUN can be both long term and short term oriented. Some student plan for the future. They look ahead and want to set a target for themselves. While most students are short term oriented.
