Survival: trying to live through a difficult circumstance where your life may be at risk. Many people try to survive every day because of a disorder of the brain called PTSD. People develop this after experiencing a traumatic experience or a near death situation . PTSD causes the person to have flashbacks of the terrifying event whenever they come across anything that looks similar to what happened at the event. This disorder decreases the volume of the brain over time causing high levels of anxiety that causes loss of memory making them unable to do things.
A handful of physicians and counselors believe the reason people suffering from PTSD can’t do things themselves is because of the increase anxiety levels which affects their concentration. Matthew Tull is an author and physician that wrote an article on how the increase in anxiety levels can greatly impact how long you can concentrate. He conducted research on a couple of patients and concluded, “High anxiety levels may also limit your ability to notice things that are going on around you or interfere with your ability to focus on a task.” (Tull) When someone is anxious it interferes with their memory. It is extremely difficult for children who see a close friend or loved one die in front of their eyes to recover. In the book Gregor The Overlander by Suzanne Collins, Gregor and his younger sister Boots are caught up in a bad situation. Boots is trapped and is about to get eaten alive by rats until a close friends named Tick steps in to save Boots but ends up getting killed, “As they bounded at her, Tick flew directly into the face of the lead rat… The lead rat sprang forward and crushed Tick’s head in its jaws.”(Collins 246). Gregor never ends up recovering from this traumatic experience and shows symptoms of PTSD throughout the book and series. Children have a tough time recovering because their brain is still
