The group I observed today is Independent Living Service (IL). IL is a growth and educational group that seeks to train individuals to maximize their growth and development. The meeting was held in Together Lives Change (TLC) and the purpose of the group is to equip adolescents with valuable tools to build healthy relationships, set goals, and become fully prepared for adult living. The group’s goals for today is to budget and plan a food menu, prepare a healthy meal and snack, practice soft skills, learn conflict resolution and develop core communication skills. Today I focused on observing the teens and how they interacted with one another in a group setting, and I was impressed with their willingness to step up and accomplish the group’s …show more content…
The adolescent has problems adjusting to group settings, so I was responsible for sitting with him and monitoring his behavior. During group, he had a couple of outbursts; however, I helped him manage his emotions by talking to him and I also provided constructive advice to help him manage his behavior.

2/27/16 6:00-11:30 Today I assisted with the winter formal that was held at TLC and this event was amazing. The teenagers were dressed to perfection and they utilized all the skills they learned about healthy relationships. They were paired up with a date and they really enjoyed themselves. This was not a mandatory event, but I have enjoyed working with the teens, so I really wanted to give my time and support. Attending this event has shown me how much TLC value their youth within their community.

Values and Ethics The NASW (2010) and the Texas Department of State Health Services provide a foundation on how social workers interacts with clients, colleagues, practice setting, and their environment. This code of ethics and Code of Conduct provide to the social workers with ethical responsibilities and values in practice setting. By analyzing this ethical responsibilities and values in practice setting it is easy to identify the ethical responsibilities I am currently using. The Texas Department of State Health Services [TDSHS] has a Code of Conducts for social workers that provides a standards of behaviors need to follow as to stay professional and avoid damaging clients’ lives and self. For example, The NASW (2010) describes an ethical principle to practice setting in which 3.07 Administration is describes has advocating for adequate services for clients to
I shadowed the Assisted Living Manager, Coley Rainbolt. As the assisted living manager, Coley has to complete monthly, quarterly, 6-month, and annual assessments for the assisted living residents on time. She has to schedule and lead care conferences in relation to residents’ needs and family expectations. She updates care plans and arranges all the resident care needs into task specific assignments for care associates. Along with all the residents she provides for, she also manages all assisted living care associates which consists of completing interim and annual evaluations timely and addressing performance concerns.
Social workers must be able to act on an issue quickly and effectively. Situations can vary depending on the case, the client, and the persons involved in the case. Herman was an elderly World War II veteran. He resided in a poor neighborhood, surrounded by different dangers: attempted break-ins, armed attempted break-ins, and other suspicious activity. There was proof of dangerous activity with what appeared to be bullet holes on his door.
The NASW Code of Ethics promotes competency of social workers by enriching professional knowledge and skills that can be used in collaborations with school administrators and teachers (NASW, 2008). School faculty can be encouraged to attend workshops and seminars, taught by a social worker, geared towards recognizing disruptive behavior and properly assessing the behavior to address the needs of minority youth. Social workers can demonstrate the differences between violent threats and non-violent threats and how to get control of the situation before it gets out of hand. Teaching school personnel effective grounding techniques to use with students to deescalate a situation will result in fewer out of school suspensions and
Some of the required competency skills are taught within the professions.
Unfortunately, too often we as a nation also let them down. When they feel there is no where to turn, they shut down and isolate themselves. Not only does the distrust impact treatment, youths in foster care will continue to face substantial adversities upon aging out that may reinforce the idea that there is not safety and security in the world. Social Worker’s Role The primary role and responsibility of the clinical social worker in the group is the development and maintenance of a healthy functioning group.
According to Trevithick, (2012) in order to understand service user and their world of meaning, we have to acknowledge our ignorance of the service users and their social world. However, this will involve learning to ask good question that will enable the service user to provide detail or sufficient information and also good observation to provide us with some clues. My second issue was not to dis-empower him or make him feel overwhelmed with lots of information so I used my professional judgement and decided to split the agenda of the link work session into two different link work session to address the issues. Communication is a very important skill when working with young people. According to the department of health (2002), students must undertake communication skills with children, adults and people with particular communication needs.
Core competency is a concept in management theory that can be defined as a harmonized combination of multiple resources and skills that distinguish a firm in the marketplace. In other words what gives you the competitive advantage with your customers in the marketplace, what is it that makes you successful against all the competition. In this example Ender is identifying not only the things he does not know but the
My Core Competencies There re billions and billions of people on planet earth at this very moment. Out of those billions and billions of people no one is the same as me or you. I may have similar qualities, but I am not the same. I am 6 feet and 2 inches and I weigh 250 pounds. The average person can handle loud noises but I can 't. I can 't handle them because I am Autistic.
Who I identify as, including identifying as a social worker once I graduate, will have some level privilege and power attached to the chosen identities. Gelfand, Sillivan, and Steinhouse (2002) noted that there are may dimensions that influence our personal and professional relationships with others, and these dimensions shape how we see and interact with, include or exclude them, and ways that we oppress or discriminate against them. As a social worker whose clients share my same identity, we may benefit by my having a shared understanding of cultural norms and expectations to reach a common goal. For clients who share commonalities with me, we may benefit by being able to work more collaboratively and possibly a more trusting relationship than one that must be built over time. However, just as similarities can be empowering, I must remember that the client knows best despite our shared identities that may speak otherwise.
Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).
Macro-level of social work practice involves working with agencies, organizations, communities and large groups. According to Sheafor & Horejsi (2014), “Advocacy involves supporting action on behalf of individuals, groups, or communities with the goal of improving a social condition or preventing a social problem from developing” (p. 46). Social workers should assure that the services they entitled their clients are receiving. However, the social workers should be gathering information to determine if the clients qualify for the service. Advocacy is important within the nonprofit agency, because it can improve policies, programs, and services.
In my social work field supervision, I am expected to abide by the NASW Code of Ethics as well as the state of Alabama code of Ethics. In social work field supervision, it gives me the opportunity to apply theory to direct and community practice with my clients. I also get a chance to learn from a veteran or seasoned social workers by observing, practicing, and experiencing the important integration of theoretical knowledge with practice skills while working with diverse populations and communities. This experience also help me build a sense of professional identity that I can only acquire in a practice setting. Field supervision also help to recognize and adhere to the core values and ethical principles of the social work profession.
When I participated in some events, I had chances to work with adolescents. It was so much fun, and totally different from the environment that works with children. However, I realized that I prefer to work with young children because working with children need more parenting and teaching than working with adolescents. I can see how young children interact with their friends in new environments through such parenting and teaching. In addition, young children show us various characteristics depending on situation or peers.
And the population they serve. Understanding more in depth about the job function and performance responsibilities of a school social worker I started to brainstorm how I can fulfill some of those responsibilities during my field experience. Some of the responsibilities I want to assist in was developing positive behavioral intervention strategies and helping the child develop appropriate social interaction
