Grit and having a growth mindset have been a great asset when it comes to success. The general idea of being gritty is having motivation to push through obstacles despite the difficulty. A growth mindset is someone who will look at what they have as just the beginning start to what could be, opposed to believing that what they start with is what they are limited to. The two together are a great package because if an individual had a growth mindset perspective and the drive of being gritty, they will see a challenge and keep going regardless of failure and setback that will lead to accomplishing their desired task instead of giving up. This growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts” (p.76). This is basically describing how people with growth mindsets will look at at what skill/ talent they have in the beginning (whether great or small) is not their limitation but what they grow from to get to where they could go. One example of this was my personal experience in my very first hip hop class when I was 11. Being the youngest and most inexperienced, it was easy to be intimidated. Not being used to this type of movement and groove, I learned the steps but kept looking down, biting my lip and overall not focusing on every part of movement so if an arm was extended out completely while doing footwork, I focused on perfecting the footwork too much and had a bent arm. Even though I was a newbie and did a lot wrong, that didn’t stop me from wanting to continue. I had natural talent picking up choreography however I was not good in many other fields when it came to this style of dance. Regardless of whether I sucked or looked like trash, I didn’t look at myself as if this was hopeless. In her essay, “Inside the Mindsets” (2005), Carol Dweck contrasts the two different mindsets and they are fixed mindset and growth mindsets. She talks about how fixed mindsets are all about who you are. For example, the characteristics traits such as the personality, how smart you are, and how creative the person is. Those who have fixed mindsets, sees criticism as an attack and they will try to avoid it. A “growth mindset,” on the other hand, challenges and sees failure as something that motivates them and tells them to keep working.
Learning about grit and what a growth mindset is allowed me to realized that grit and a growth mindset work together to support success. Grit is the motivation one possess that will determine whether they win or lose. The grittier a person is the more they learn, get experience and discover their potentials. All of these things define what a growth mindset is. In other words, a growth mindset is discovering your unknown potentials.
Hanford’s article also provides the example of the spelling bee, “In a study we found of finalist in the spelling bee, we found that grittier children completed more hours of deliberate practice [Pg. 52]”. Connecting Duckworth and Hanford’s article they both use the spelling bee to provide an example to understand the true definition of grit. In the article “Mindset,” by Carol Dweck, Dweck provides a definition and example of two mindsets. She focuses on having a growth mindset, since most people that obtain a growth mindset are most likely to be more successful in life.

" In her speech, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, 2013, author Angela Lee Duckworth emphasizes that grit is the most beneficial quality for students to develop, and she motivates her audience of instructors to consider how they can guide students to be more "gritty." Duckworth supports this emphasis by using ethos and rhetorical questions and answering them, showing that she is a teacher and uses personal experiences to connect with her audience. Duckworth's purpose is to teach teachers to instill a "grit" mindset in order to show that children will lead better lives with more opportunities if they have more grit. Growth mindset is quite the hypocritical idea, it encourages this willingness to put yourself out there and make mistakes, in a system that is structured to punish mistakes. Schools have been based on your marks for many years, your grades are, your ability to succeed are, and even your ability to get awarded for extra curriculars are. That is how it has been for many years, and although lessons in growth mindsets are a great step forward we are not adapting the rest of the system to match. As we say to think outside of the box and risk your learning we are also rolling out more and more standardized tests. Those tests encourage the exact opposite of our main goal which is to allow students a welcoming and safe learning environment.
The Greatness in Grit There are many important human traits but I am only going to be talking about one that one trait is grit. Grit is a strong trait that some people have and other people don’t it is not something that can be taught it is something that must always be there and most people have some amount of grit big or small it always makes a difference in their character and their integrity. One main person who helped me with my research was Angela Lee Duckworth. Ms. Duckworth is a professor at University of Pennsylvania in the Psychology department. She was a Math teacher, who wanted to look at the psychologic aspect of a successful student. I was in awe of her Ted Talk "The Key to Success Grit", interview article, and her research.
