Growth mindset and Grit are two traits used to help a person with success. Some
one with a Growth Mindset can learn from their mistakes and help them change the
problem in the future. Grit is the amount of effort put into passing or overcoming a
problem till you master it. I believe to have a Growth Mindset you need to have Grit.
Having both traits will help you push forward and not give up till you are satisfied and
most of the time to prove people wrong.
Grit is “ sticking with things over the very long tern until you master them,” based

on Grit” by Emily Hanford, Hanford describes gritty as how much effort someone puts

other words, Hanford describes gritty as putting much more time into something to pass
others and to win. From some of my personal experiences, at times I was gritty was the
week before the chemistry regents. I was told I had to take the regent a week before the
day of the test. Being surprised last minute, with barely any knowledge of the subject I
went to my chemistry teacher after school and told him about my situation. With little
time to study and get ready for the exam I wasted none of it. Everyday after school I
stood with my chemistry teacher and studied and learning something new each time I got
a question wrong. I studied during any free time and also studied with friends to learn
new ways to memorize key parts. With only one week of studying and working as much
as I could I went into that testing room feeling confident. After getting that pasting grade
I realized how much that week of studying paid off.

Growth mindset is quite the hypocritical idea, it encourages this willingness to put yourself out there and make mistakes, in a system that is structured to punish mistakes. Schools have been based on your marks for many years, your grades are, your ability to succeed are, and even your ability to get awarded for extra curriculars are. That is how it has been for many years, and although lessons in growth mindsets are a great step forward we are not adapting the rest of the system to match. As we say to think outside of the box and risk your learning we are also rolling out more and more standardized tests. Those tests encourage the exact opposite of our main goal which is to allow students a welcoming and safe learning environment.
The Greatness in Grit There are many important human traits but I am only going to be talking about one that one trait is grit. Grit is a graduation speech from Dr. Kathleen Hart at a college commencement ceremony in 2013. In this speech she talks about what it takes to succeed, and the word she uses is grit. Throughout the speech she lists many identities that a person with grit has. She also mentions that a person does not succeed based on looks, luck, or knowing someone who helped them get there. It is simply based on the attribute a person has no matter what.
People usually describe gritty as the the grittiness of the sand,the roughness and so on and so forth.but in order to have grittiness you need a growth mindset. Several studies have been done in different types of people to see how these two characteristics can assist oneself achieve in career. Duckworth herself writes, “...about 1 in 20 cadets drops out during summer of training before their first academic year...grit was the best predictor of which cadets would stick around through that first difficult summer... In fact, it was a much better predictor than the Whole Candidate Score, which West Point at that time thought was their best predictor of success.” Her point is that test scores do not determine how sage, fortitudinous, or adroit someone is. On the other hand grit does predict success over and beyond talent.
The growth mindset believes that their potential intelligence comes from learning, while the fixed mindset thinks they only have a certain amount of intelligence. Along with their differences in learning, these students also have a difference in school priorities. The students with the fixed mindset only cared how smart they would appear and turned down opportunities that were critical to their success. Students with the growth mindset thought about their efforts, and when they work harder it will show in their abilities and accomplishments. I agree with this because everyone will react differently to a setback, especially if they already react differently to education.
