"Guidance" Cuts Budget cuts consist of cutting teachers due to insufficient funds being given to the school district. A question has arisen on why the school counselors don 't get threatened by budget cuts. Close your eyes. Think about creating a high school. What is one position that is critical to have when running a school? Of course, a principal, a vice principal, some teachers, some janitors, and cafeteria workers would all be needed. But you also need guidance counselors. Guidance counselors shouldn 't be affected by the yearly budget cuts because they help improve students academically, socially, and emotionally. Students are in charge of their own answers and thought process, so how can guidance counselors help them academically? …show more content…

It may be cheaper to just hire social workers, but the school counselors fulfill many different but similar responsibilities. According to Jacqueline Agresta, the roles of a counselor and the role of a school social worker are completely the same job, with few differences. The differences being the salary, the effect on students and the process on which situations are handled (Agresta 2004). School social workers don 't get to sit there and bond with the students, they are there to help them with situations going on at home, not in school. They help with any issues that the school can help with. The guidance counselors, on the other hand, get to bond with the students impact them, build trust with them, they help with the emotional state, and they also get to help deal with the issues inside and outside of school. They can keep it confidential, to a certain extent. Social workers have to turn anything and everything into the school. On the official School Social Worker 's Role website it states a quote written by Heather Alden that says "I cannot teach the head when the heart is broken or the mind is troubled". School Counselors really try their best to make the school environment the best that it could possibly be at the moments. Yes, there is always room for progress but it takes more than just the counselors to make progress. Counselors help improve the student body as a whole.Budget cuts should not affect them due to the importance of their role in the school.
