Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body 's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and/or the person is almost totally paralyzed. In some severe cases the disorder is life threatening- potentially interfering with breathing and sometimes with blood pressure or heart rate. Becase of these consequences it can be referred to as a medical emergency. Many individuals that have this disorder are often put on a ventilator …show more content…
It does not matter what age or sex the patients are, it can attack anyone. The syndrome is rare, only afflicting about one person out of 100,000. Usually Guillain-Barré occurs a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery will trigger the syndrome. Recently, some countries worldwide have reported an increased in GBS following the infection with the Zika virus. In some rare instances vaccinations do not help rather they may increase the risk of …show more content…
It can occur to someone that has no history in their family. It is rare order that more than one person in the family is diagnosis with this syndrome. When paitents have a bacterial or viral infection may be more likely to develop GBS, however, only a very small percentage of people who have this infection are likely to develop Guillain-Barré syndrome. In order for the immune system to fight the infection, specialized immune cells have to produce proteins called antibodies, which are able to recognize specific proteins or molecules within the bacteria or virus. Some research shows that antibodies that recognize molecules on some pathogens may also recognize proteins on the body’s own nerves. As a result, the immune system attacks the nerves, causing inflammation and damaging the axons and myelin, which can lead to the signs and symptoms of Guillain-Barré
Tay-Sachs is a rare, inherited, metabolic disease that is caused by a defective gene on chromosome 15. This defect causes the body to not make a protein called hexosaminidase which leads to chemicals building up. These chemicals destroy the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Tay-Sachs is also called GM2 gangliosidosis, HexA deficiency, Hexosaminidase A deficiency, and Hexosaminidase alpha-subunit deficiency. Tay-Sachs is most common in infants and children.
Around 75% of individuals develop limb-onset ALS, with initial involvement occurs in the upper and lower extremities. The other 25% develop bulbar-onset ALS, with initial involvement occurring in the bulbar muscles. The bulbar muscles are considered to be the muscles of the mouth and throat that are responsible for speech and swallowing. Bulbar-onset ALS is more common in middle-aged women with the prevalent beginning stage symptoms being difficulty swallowing, chewing and
Polio: An Eradicated Disease It was unthinkable for someone to contract polio if they were born in the 1960s or later in America. To that generation and after, polio was just another fleeting disease. People born before this time period are reminded how frightening the disease was, which debilitated thousands of people.
Seizures occur due to an abnormal electrical charge in the brain. There are two different types of seizures: generalized and partial seizures. They are classified as two different groups because of where and how they begin. Generalized seizures begin with an electrical charge that affects both sides of the brain at one time. Partial seizures begin with one electrical impulse that only affects a small part of the brain.
The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled. The cause of SIS is uncertain, but it is thought that the brain's arterioles lose their ability to regulate
To encourage a positive attitude, emotional support from friends and family help the patient mentally (Larson). ALS is a very mystifying disease that in 90 percent of cases, scientists do not know the cause. Scientists say that nothing in the ALS patient’s diet, where they live, or how they have lived their life can be a credible case for ALS. However, in a small percent of cases, a genetic history can exist. In these cases around half of the entire family is diagnosed with ALS (Causes of
When people with Celiac eat gluten, their immune system damages the villi
The individual may need support or assistance with weakness from limbs and walking, sitting, transferring, washing and bathing. They may need a wheelchair for a period of time or for the foreseeable future. They may acquire speech and communication difficulties. The individual may find it difficult to express themselves through facial expressions and body language. Although some people may acquire rehabilitation and physio treatment and make a full recovery or have physical effects that many individuals will not be able to recognise or know
In Awakenings, most of these patients were survivors of the epidemic, showing signs of multiple diseases. Encephalitis is discussed as being the inflammation of the brain; not the outer layering of the brain, called meningitis, but the brain itself (Davis, 1). With all that inflammation, it would be easy to analyze and see that those neurotransmitters would have a hard time doing their job, and getting the brain to send those signals to the rest of the body in order to function. No wonder symptoms of encephalitis such as stiffness in the body, confusion, memory loss, paralysis, and lack of responsiveness are complications (Davis, 4). Encephalitis is believed to be viral, and can come from simple things such as herpes simplex, also known as HSV (Davis, 2).
Various diseases affect mankind ranging from common cold to some rather serious ones. Write the missing letters to complete the names of these diseases. 1. This disease spreads rapidly and sometimes causes a tumour.
There are at least 3 seed viruses such as EB viruses, jumbo Bye-law brother viruses, HIV virus have the association with the Sjögren's syndrome, resulting in the production of immunoglobulins to attack the patients’ body. Symptoms: The two main symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome are the dry eyes and dry months. There are also other symptoms depends on each patient.
According to WebMD, the first type of spinal muscular disease is the most serious variant due to the fact that most children with type 1 fail to live past two years of age from breathing issues because the muscles that control breathing are feeble. Symptoms of type 1 include limp arms and legs as well as the trouble swallowing. Moreover, type 2 spinal muscular atrophy occurs with children from six to eighteen months old. According to the National Organization for Rare Diseases, children with type 2 are able to sit on their own, but fail to walk more than 10 feet, however, once they mature to a teenager, they will be unable to sit independently. A symptom common for people diagnosed with type 2 is the fingers quivering (National Organization for Rare Diseases).
“Gluten ataxia” is a gluten-triggered disease whose primary symptoms occur in the brain (Velasquez-Manoff par. 20). This proves that certain proteins on neurons structurally resemble proteins in wheat. For example, if the immune system attacks gluten, it might also inadvertently pursue brain tissue (Velasquez-Manoff par. 21). This condition damages the cerebellum, located in the back of your head. Damaging of this part of the brain causes loss of coordination and progressive disabilities (Anderson par. 2).
If the individual is experiencing symptoms that is illness then there is something wrong with his/her body. He or she will then proceeds to the next stage which is illness delay. For example, if the individual is experiencing symptoms such as a lump on the breast then he or she would go through a period of trying to decide what the symptom might mean and then what to do about it.
It is caused due to the nerves steering the muscles in the body that slowly dies off. This follows with, loosing the ability to speak and swallows which leads to complete paralysis. Yet, not any known cure is invented to help patients with ALS, which is the reason why the ice bucket challenges was needed. (Mahoney
