There should be gun control in the United States. It seems that a growing amount of accidental shootings take place in our nation.The safety of ourselves and fellow citizens is in jeopardy.
Like I mentioned before, the amount of accidental shootings in the U.S. is horrendous.
From 2005-2010, almost 3,800 people in the U.S. died from unintentional shootings. However, accidental gun deaths occur mainly in those under 25 years old. Restrictions on public usage of guns, especially in younger ages, can perhaps help the safety of others. The amount of children playing with guns is alarming as well. A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics regarding adult firearm storage practices found that over 1.69 million
Gun Control and Mass Shootings in America Gun violence is an unquestionable issue in America, with the United States ranking as one of the worst with both homicides and suicides using guns. That being said, we outnumber Mexico in gun related deaths and among first-world countries we rank far above others in the number of gun deaths, such as England and Australia. Consequently, we live in one of the only first world countries that does not have extensive gun laws and restrictions to gun access. Aside from the countless homicides and suicides by firearm in this country, one particular issue within this predicament is mass shootings, with the most recent mass shooting occurring on February 14th, 2018 at a high school in Parkland, Florida where 17 people were killed. Although, it may seem like an easy fix to just implement gun control laws into our society to eliminate gun violence, but it is important to note that Americans own nearly half of all firearms globally, which is roughly 325 million guns;
Should There Be Tighter Gun Restrictions in America ? On the twentieth of December, 2012 twenty-six people were shot dead and only two others injured. The gruesome attack occurred in the morning at sandy hook elementary school in Connecticut the perpetrator Adam Lanzo begin this horrific attack by shooting his mother at 9:30am he then took his mother’s rifle and drove to the nearby elementary school where he then began to open fire on first grade students aged just six to seven and shooting any staff members that got in his way. This resulted in the deaths of twenty children and the deaths of six teachers.
This resulted in an increase by 183% of shootings and by 239% of deaths by guns. Obviously, this is a problem, that both puts people’s lives at risk and makes some live in fear. First, the number of shootings is completely intolerable. Many innocent people die due to gun shootings.
Why gun control laws don’t work How do you feel Knowing your kids are not safe at school or if you are a student how do you feel that you know you are not safe at school. According to Aaron Bandler ”The Crime Research Prevention Center determined that since 1950, nearly 99 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in gun-free zones. The terror attack in Orlando, FL and the shooting that murdered singer Christina Grimmie in June also took place in gun free zones. The reason is obvious: deranged murderers want to be in a position to murder as many as possible, so they target areas where they 're least likely to find armed resistance, which happen to be gun-free zones”.
New open carry law will not make Texas college campuses safer Texas government recently passed a new law, Senate Bill 11, which would allow college campus faculty and students to carry a concealed handgun to license holders. Subsequently, this new law will increase the rates of gun related shootings and suicides (Watkins, Matthew, 2015). School shootings are being publicized more due to social media, but they are still very atypical in the United States. Suicide rates will also increase as young adults have more access to firearms. (Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, 2013).
30,000 lives are ended with guns, this doesn’t include the families and friends affected by such occurrences. There has been a rise in the death toll of mass shootings and the frequency of them, the deadliest only occurred last year. In 2018, there have been twenty nine mass shootings alone (Gun Violence Archive). The safety of all Americans are called into jeopardy, so the paramount question is, to what extent should the distribution and utilization of guns be regulated by the government? Gun control opposers, those who own guns and fight for the right of gun ownership, believe that any alteration
Whether its accidental or on purpose something has to be done to make sure guns are being used the way they are suppose to be used. Opening I would like to say that there should be stricter rules when dealing with guns. I’m tired of having to turn on the television and seeing a innocent life taken away by a gun purchased by a teen. For example, the school shootings have been very hard to watch and look at. Every time I hear or see one I get very choked up inside.
In the wake of the recent string of mass shootings, the issues of gun control and gun rights have continued to be a national prominence. The frequencies of the occurrence of these mass shootings have desensitized many of the public. These mass shootings bring up an important issue and question at hand. Does limiting access to assault weapons reduce crime, more importantly mass shootings?
Many accidental deaths happen each year by guns in the hands of people who do not know gun safety. People are concerned that the amount of guns available have allowed gun violence to run rampant throughout the United States. An estimation of the amount of people in the U.S. shot each year is staggering, “The Brady Campaign to Prevent Violence estimates that around 144,994 people are shot each year in the U.S.” (8 Facts). This data shows that thousands each year are shot in the United States, which includes the deaths of those killed each year. According to the supporters of more age restrictions, the new laws will take some of the guns off the streets and decrease the amount of gun
‘’Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).. In 2014, the CDC reported that 11,008 of the 15,872 homicides committed in the United States that year involved a firearm. Of the 42,826 suicides reported that year, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the federal and state levels to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence’’(‘’Gun Control’’). According to the statistic guns are held for over 33,000 deaths in the United States.
However, if they can end their lives so easily, there is no way back. Most importantly, some gunshot is an accident but it still takes away lives. According to CNN’s report, 1,300 US children’s lives were taken away by guns. Most are not killed by others, but themselves accidentally pull the trigger. An experiment was conducted in 2001 to test what would children react to a gun (Geoffrey A. J., Mirna M. F., Arthur L. K.,
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.
Right now Florida and 41 other states has the "shall-issue" law which allow people who meet the minimum requirement to get a concealed weapon permit. You must be the legal age, have not committed a felony within 3 year period of submitting the application, no metal illness, and few other important requirement. These few rules sound simple enough, but people are still getting around rules and using firearms for the wrong reasons. In This paper I will be discussing the con side of having a concealed weapon permit. This paper will go over why it's important to follow gun safety at home and on the street.
In order to protect children and their family members, they should be taught the proper way on how to shoot guns. Gun safety needs to be taught to children to promote more respect for firearms while improving education and decreasing gun violence (Foley). Many accidental shootings happened in America in the past two or three years. One example is, a three year old accidentally reach into his pregnant mother’s purse and took out her pistol and shot his mom and dad. Now the child has to live with all that for the rest of his life knowing he shot his mom and dad, in 2015 toddlers in the United State accidently shot one person per week.
