Historicizing Gutai Discourses of Originality

Tiempo 's essay focuses on the theory and practice of Gutai art innovations and how they are interpreted and understood as Japanese modern art. Tiampo presents a well written essay with the intent to bring awareness of the history and impact of Gutai art. As a professor in art history, Tiampo offers, not only examples, but also detailed information about how Gutai art made important contributions to modern art history. Tiempo opens the essay with creating a visual image of Gutai art and how Yoshihara Jiro, thought leader of Gutai art presented his work at the First Gutai Art Exhibition in 1955. This captured my attention; so dramatically written and drew me in to read on about this unique and interactive art. The history of Gutai art and the motivation behind such art is what Tiempo stresses throughout the essay, focusing on the original Gutai art concept.

The painting is located directly in front of the viewer. This critique points the description, thorough analysis and viewers judgement of the artwork.
Framework originalism is the most plausible and applicable version of originalism for modern day government. This kind of originalism views the constitution as the “blue print” that sets the making of government and its institutions into motion. In implementing the constitution, framework originalist believe that it should be looked at as the skeleton that must be filled out by future generations. While framework originalism does allow for some digression for constitutional constructions of the future, it sticks to its originalist roots by emphasizing a required fidelity to original meaning. Framework originalism emerged resulting from the failures of the originalism that came before it.
Morgan Pitelka’s article “The Empire of Things: Tokugawa Ieyasu's Material Legacy and Cultural Profile” is a piece which allows the reader to engage in an intellectually stimulating discussion about the material legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu. This particular article paints Ieyasu in a positive light due to the fact that the cultural profile created is done so mainly through the use of a single source. Pitelka’s article discusses the life and legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The article itself paints Ieyasu in a positive light due to the nature of the source used to create a cultural profile of the shogun.

While reading “The Trouble with (the Term) Art,” written by Carolyn Dean in the summer of 2006, we are taken through an array of different scenarios that lead us to questions what art really is. Dean explores the idea that the word “art” is used far too often and too habitually, and that as we study the non-Western cultures we need to use much more discretion regarding what we call the different pieces of their culture. Throughout the essay, Dean supports her thesis that we too often categorize non-Western pieces as art by using different examples of how certain non-art pieces were deemed as art throughout the course of their history. Dean does this by using four key examples of how these ancient pieces are inappropriately called art to successfully support her thesis and avoid biases.
Sakoto Fujikasa featured work of artistry displayed within the Harn Museum is know as “Stream.” This piece in particular demonstrates a medium that has been contorted to displays various ripples and waves to resembled that of flowing water. Hence, the name “stream” best befitting it’s whimsical nature. However, at a deeper interpretation of her piece, it can be seen that there is a hiding meaning.
I learned a lot, and I enjoyed all the artwork while I was there. Writing this essay is probably one of the more difficult essays I have written in a while. Mostly because I’am trying to understand the meaning behind an artwork. There is no right or wrong way to interpret art. Each person has their own interpretations.

“Visual Arts cultivate thinking, innovation and collaboration.” As I write this paper today, I realized how each of us analyse everything in our lives without even meaning to do so. The museum that I decided to visit virtually was the Offizi Gallery in Italy. Located in Florence, this gallery included numerous paintings, sculptures and ceramics. The art piece that I have decided to write an analysis on today is The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.
In Yo-yo Ma’s writing, “Necessary Edges: Art, Empathy, and Education”, Ma discusses the importance of integrating arts in society and education; this differs from Rhys Southan’s writing, “Is Art a Waste of Time”, for it talks about how the “Effective Altruism” movement does not see art as valuable because it does not make major contributions to society. Art is a tool used to communicate with people; this tool positively impacts contemporary culture, for it brings different cultures closer together, changes opinions, and it is useful in education. Art is used all around the world to express culture. The art forms created by different cultures are shared with one another, and this creates subcultures and links cultures together.
During the reign of Emperor Saga, Chinese poetry was tremendously popular in Japanese society. In addition to Chinese poetry, Chinese fashion, books, and works of art, many of them introduced by the scholar Kukai, became prevalent in high Japanese society. Indeed, “Kukai…returned not only with many books and works of art, but also with knowledge of the latest Chinese fashions” (Varley 56). Furthermore, many Buddhist monks brought Chinese works of art to Japan for use in rituals, and these works of art highly influenced the painting styles of Japanese artists. Eventually, Japan had created their own fine arts culture that was an altered form of the Chinese arts.
This research was carried out not to only show awareness toward the society but also why people should take art seriously. Often times, we can see lots of people debating whether art is important or not. This happened because the lack of exposure and knowledge that has been taught to them. Art can help to shape the society and affect the society to broaden their view of perspective in life by referring on the artworks because each work of art can give different meanings to life.
While living in Japan from 1986 to 1995, he has experimented with the properties of gunpowder leading to the development of his signature explosive events. From masterpieces like “Bringing to Venice What Macro Polo Forgot” in 1995 to the “Borrowing Your Enemy’s Arrows” and in 1999. Cai Guo Qiang used Chinese elements and stories in his art which attracted many westerners who are interested in the Chinese culture. Cai Guo Qiang also played important roles in the contemporary art scenes globally, creating unique artworks that put China’s art on the global stage.
