A top priority for most women is beauty, but is it more important than health? It has been shown that in America, about one-third of women get their hair done unnaturally. Hair treatments that affect one’s health in the most negative way are Brazilian Blowouts, Brasil cacau cadiveu, keratin complex smoothing therapy, express blowout, and Marcia teixeira which are all types of hair smoothing treatments with the Brazilian Blowout as the most common. In Oregon, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) tested over 100 samples of keratin-based hair smoothing products and they found that many of the cosmetics tested went well over the formaldehyde limit. In Portland, Oregon last year, a hair stylist had an unfortunate experience after getting a Brazilian Blowout even though the product had stated that it was “formaldehyde-free”. A Brazilian Blowout causes frizzy hair to be straight for up to three months and uses a combination of formaldehyde and keratin. But little do these customers know that even though some bottles say “formaldehyde-free”, they still end up breathing in the formaldehyde fumes because it contains a watered down version of formaldehyde called methylene glycol. Once methylene glycol is dried under a blow dryer, it recovers back to formaldehyde which then puts out their fumes. Along with many of the side effects of formaldehyde, it may also lead into nose and throat cancer along with leukemia (Blomberg). Professional hair care products are bad for people’s health because of their high toxicity level therefore they should have a better warning …show more content…
A wide range of chemicals are being exposed to hairdressers and barbers on a daily basis such as volatile organic chemicals, compounds that can easily become vapors or gases, through hair sprays or setting oils (Epidemiol). Since the abolishment of slavery black women are no long being forced to alter their hair; however the underlying principle still remains as society indirectly forces black women to alter their hair in order to “fit in” as society says having straightened hair symbolizes femininity. Once again these standards exclude black women as their “kinky” hair does not fit into societal norms of feminine. Therefore they must alter their hair, may it be chemically or thermally, in order to come close to the dominant standard of beauty (Donald, year). In essence, among black women hair alteration is done because of outside pressures and as times process they began altering their hair as a means to feeling beautiful within themselves rather then self hatred.

Three main factors to this trend in cancer is frequent exposure to environmental carcinogens, inheritance of cancer genes and having a weak immune system. For instance, “ The results of the research indicate that DNA damage does occur in workers exposed to low concentrations of styrene.” (Doc. D) Since workers are frequently being exposed to carcinogens their cells are vulnerable to damage. A majority of these workers that come in contact with these carcinogens work in construction or agricultural fields.
Indoor tanning bed use is a huge problem in the United States. Baker and colleagues reported back in 1990 that the number of tanning salons in the United States was as high as 200,000, there were 40,000 different places who manufactured tanning beds, and roughly 200,000 people had tanning beds in their home (Baker et al., 1990). This makes it easy for one to find a place to use an indoor tanning bed. The American Academy of Dermatology reported that 59% of college students have used a tanning bed at some point in their life, and that using a tanning bed before age 35 can increase a person’s risk of developing melanoma by 59% each time an indoor tanning bed is used (ADA, 2018). A majority of college students who use indoor tanning beds do
When I look around me I see people that are different shapes, sizes, and are different races, however what seems to be very interesting and unique about everyone is our hair. Our hair defines our personality that we carry into the community. Especially in the African-American culture our hair is considered ever changing, new, and trend setting. From the braids, to locs, perms, or just being natural, African-American women do not play about their hair. Though when we get our hair done it is a process and it takes time for our hair to look so good, we struggle with issues that come along with how are hair looks.

In an article I found through the Cline Library, using the same keywords (hair dye, health), I found an article that suggests that hair dye can be a cause of bladder cancer. In the article “Personal hair dye use and bladder cancer: a meta-analysis” they use an analysis to to prove the relative risk when using hair dye. Permanent hair dye is more likely to contain high concentration, especially if they are darker colors, which lead to a risk of urinary bladder cancer. The study is not yet a closed case, but it is believed to be more of a risk factor to hairdressers, mainly because they are exposed to the chemicals more often than those who dye their hair. The meta-analysis that was performed was a computerized search that they used to study more about the potential risks.
