Sound of One Hand Clapping
Introduction
Greeting my fellow classmates, happy holiday, after this week reading I began to appreciate public health the more, I am so happy to be here. Anyway, concerning this week discussion, I will start by saying that the unwillingness of the health sector to transfer the outcomes of medical research about the pathogenesis of diseases into public health policy has not augured well for our communities. The aetiology of diseases, health, and wellness is not only biologically or physiologically determined, but they are also socially and economically determined. Therefore, the transition of medical research from the Laboratory to therapy, and back to the laboratory is an unproductive cycle, which is like the shout of a dumb or the sound of one hand clapping (Jiang, Zhang, Wang & Shen, 2013), that does not produce results. According to my previous discussion forum post, there is a disconnection between the health sector and policymakers, today I want to continue on the same note. This paper will first build upon my original

Experience has shown that passing laws is not only cost-effective but also saves many lives. The China child lead poisoning and the sleep insufficiency in school-aged children (Jiang, Zhang, Wang & Shen, 2013) are two among thousands of stories of similar results that placed emphasis on public policy and medical research partnership. Seatbelt laws have saved many lives in my country, what would have happened to those lives if there were no such policy on use of seatbelts in vehicles, remarkably these lives are saved by just simply obedience to the policy. This is the excellent power of public policy and health sector
The essay “Best Hope Lies in Privately Funded Stem Cell Research”, states the importance of stem cell research and the effects it can have on curing disease more effectively than any other method. Written by Sigrid Fry-Revere, PhD, director of bioethics studies at the Cato Institute; the author of the paper emphasizes the importance of funding programs for stem cell research on highlights the government holding out on funding due to ethical reasons. Revere claims that the government is threatening the private investing of stem cell research organizations and are trying to put a stop to production of research. This essay is targeted for people who are academic/bioethics orientated and the future of the world disease control and abolishment.
I feel that it is necessary to take advantage of the medical innovations acquired through the discovery of HeLa cells, even if it was not done ethically. At the time when the medical innovations were first coming out, there was no knowledge of the foul play that had occurred. Public health systems were able to use the technologies discovered to improve the quality of life for millions of people. In that respect alone I feel that the public health system was accurate. When the discovery of the negative practices arose, I feel that public health systems still responded effectively as they became major players in the process of regulating research and protecting its subjects.
Science and ethics have been colliding back and forth for centuries. Science want to discover new technologies to help people and for other selfish reason. People want medical help to save their loved ones. Many times scientists have sacrificed the good of a few for the needs of many. In Rebecca Skloot's modern day investigative biography The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Rebecca Skloot uses Pathos to develop the themes of immorality and unethical behavior of medical science.
In heart disease, it was found that 169.9 NHW were affected and 116.0 Latinos were affected. The cancer death rate in NHW was 166.2 and the death rate in Latinos was 112.4. Lastly the death rate of NHW for CLRD was found to be 45.4 and in Latinos it was found to be 17.5. These statistics challenge the health models formed by scientific theories and practices and connects to the idea of science always changing and the prevalence of paradoxes continuously shifting. The Latino epidemiological paradox is a direct example of Kuhn’s description of a scientific
“In 1981, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services enacted regulations for the protection of human subjects, known as the “Common Rule,” which establish the standard governing research that is supported by federal government,” (Rao). Because of cases such as this, the government now has in place several federal laws protecting the rights of patients. If it were not for these laws, doctors would have more control over what is done with our bodies than
To a lot of people, mostly boys’ cheerleading isn’t considered a sport. But did you know that cheerleading was originally meant for boys? I bet you didn’t, the first cheerleader’s name was Johnny Campbell; he decided that one day that he wanted to lead chants at the University of Minnesota’s football game. He then created a whole team that would help him lead the crowd at different University of Minnesota sports games. Then, on November 2, 1898, Johnny Campbell was recognized to be the world’s first official cheerleader.
One of the concluding sentences that Dr. Sharon Moalem directs toward her audience is, “[...] Our relationship with disease is often much more complex than we may have previously realized.” “Survival of the Sickest” delves into the theme of the way inheritance and genetic codes in our bloodlines allows fatal diseases to enter our body and the reasons for this happening. The author discusses various diseases and their origin, and includes facts as to how this disease is able to affect modern life. She suggests that said modern diseases played a necessary part in the survival and selection of those before us in our history.

To a myriad of people, disease is an invisible and unpredictable fiend, preying on anyone and everyone. However, this perspective is only a fragment of the mind boggling truth. The reality is that the line between protagonist and antagonist for disease is undistinguished. Diabetes, an increasingly common condition imbalances blood sugar levels, along with hemochromatosis and G6PD all exemplify the ambiguous nature of disease. A thorough inspection of the history, personality, and effects of each sickness, as described by The Survival of the Sickest, will disclose just how our afflictions factored into humanity’s survival.
