Through-out the years, countless number of actors have taken on the challenging role of Othello. Many of them have succeeded, while many have come short of expectation. Nevertheless, the role of Othello remains the most challenging to play and is a testament of the ability of all actors, since it was first performed in 1604. From our generations different interpretations on the language of the plays, to the need for creativity to captivate the audience. The challenges for actors have been increasing with every year. On March 19, 1930 Paul Robeson took the stage as the actor of Othello, with a twist. Robeson would be kissing a white women on stage, which is something audience have never witnessed, and without any incidents prior to the play, the performance was an incredible success. The performance continued for an unimaginable 295 performances and after the first performance, Robeson received 20 curtain calls. After the play was an incredible success in London, the performed at New York, at opening night the cast received and outstanding 20 minute standing ovation for a total of 10 curtain calls. But it was not a part without any challenges. From the actors trying to bring out their dark side, showing such an endless case of emotions and feelings in their body language to their interpretation of the play and language Shakespeare used during his era. The challenges seem to keep growing over the years and are an enormous tasks that could make any actor capable a star. Roberson whom set records with reviews and continuous performances that spanned both London and Broadway in New York, to IRA becoming the first African American to play the role. To the first actor to play the role of Othello, Richard whom played almost all of Shakespeare celebrated roles, set the expectations for the part to a level that many could not reach. Regardless of the actor, the challenges or the triumphs the role of Othello is legendary in its own right and is a role that actors dream of playing. Othello’s Demise Othello, the lead character in William Shakespeare’s play Othello, is done in by the same character attributes, which propelled him to become a great military leader. He has accomplished great victories in battle to the likes, of no others. He is held in high regard throughout the nations as one of the greatest military leaders and is called upon to fight in the most challenging battles successfully. The tragedy of Othello written by William Shakespeare presents the main character Othello as a respectable, honorable, and dignified man. However, because of his insecurities and good nature he is easily taken advantage of and manipulated by his alleged friends. Shakespeare is known for his exceptional ability to compose plays full of deceit, revenge, and jealousy. Jealousy is an underlying theme throughout the tragedy and has been represented by many of the main characters, such as Iago, Roderigo, and Othello. The topic of jealousy will ultimately lead to the demise of many characters throughout the tragedy.
Othello’s mental state needs to be deteriorating quickly compared to yesterday’s assessment. While everything seemed to be promising in our previous session, Othello now looks to be more stressed and overly emotional. Particularly, he is questioning his recent marriage to Desdemona and her faithfulness due to certain recent conversations with his Ensign, Iago. Impassioned and distraught, Othello confided in me, stating, ”Why did I marry? This honest creature doubtless /Sees and knows more, much more, than he unfolds.

Development of Othello The character of Othello transforms during the course of the play from a respected and revered general to a fallen and easily fooled man, due to the unfortunate sequence of events that transpire through both coincidence and Iago’s evil designs. He said that he wouldn’t be the jealous type unless he had seen it happen right in front of him, but with the help of Iago and a lot of coincidences it had happened in front of him. Iago, the main antagonist of Othello, exemplifies Shakespeare’s use of characterization to create in depth and complex characters. Using his manipulative nature, intellectual mind, egotistical attitude, and dishonesty, Iago controls the other characters in order to achieve his goal, leading Othello to succumb to an overwhelming jealousy causing his downfall. In order for Iago to gain control of the characters in the play, he manipulates Othello, Roderigo, Cassio, and more to believe false information and turn on one another.
The play of Othello is a tragedy that exposes the characters in several ways, causing conflict and envy, eventually leading to a tragic end. To achieve this tragic end, Iago uses manipulation in order to change the views of, and bring out multiple personalities in the characters. One's perception of a situation is directly proportional to the demeanor of a person. When a person changes the way that they look at a situation, the entire way that they present themself; their attitude, behavior, and traits that they exude, change.
Othello, the play's protagonist and hero; is a Cristian moore who has a genuine and strong love for god. General Othello id physically and mentally powerful, despite all the heat he gets for being a colored man around that time. Most times he manages to always keep a cool head and does whatever needs to be done to execute the whatever mission that needs to be complete. Iago is also an important character in the play.
