Harry Hess helped with the plate tectonic theory. In 1945, when he was the commander of the USS Cape Johnson, he discovered that the sea-floor was spreading. While he was traveling around, he would leave the sounding equipment on that would take measurements of the sea floor. One of the main things he worked on is proving that the sea-floor is spreading.
Harry Hess was born on May 27, 1906. He was born in New York. He got his PH.D. in the 1932 and his degree a year befor. He taught for one year at the University of Rutgers. Then later on he researched associate in a Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution in Washington. In 1934 he started working as a professor at the Princeton University and he became the head of the Geology Department in 1950 and in 1964. Harry Hess became a military worker and fought in World War 2. Later in his career, he became the captain of the USS Cape Johnson, an attack transport ship equipped with a new technology called the sonar. With this new tool he was able to start his study of seafloor spreading. He could use this to study the seafloor and see what has changed and what is even moving. He ended up going on an unexpected ride to war over the Pacific Ocean which

Today we could just go under water in a full suit and just take a picture with our phones or even just send down a camera or a drone to take pic for us. Unlike then when they didn't have any drones or even a way of taking a camera underwater without it getting waterdamge they didn't even have the gear to swim down. Almost no man can swim nor even be able to hold their breath or even withstand how cold it would be. He was very limited by how little equipment they had. Also they couldn't really tell how old it is until they took many pictures of it from there

Robert Ballard was known for his work in underwater archeology and discovery of shipwrecks. He joined the army in 1965 and requested to fulfill his obligation in the navy. His request to aiding in the navy allowed Ballard to design small, unmanned submersibles that could be tethered and controlled from a surface ship. Ballard’s works that were contributed in aiding the navy also contributed in searching for his first shipwreck, the Titanic. Robert Ballard was able to contribute his discoveries to America by the exploration of undersea technology, his relationship with the navy in cooperating with Ballard’s explorations, and the use of deep-diving submarines to explore the surface of the ocean and encounter abandoned or destroyed ships of past

After doing researches on fossils and rock, scientist studied the ocean floor to further support the continental drift theory. Harry Hess, a navy officer, used sonar technology to gather information about the ocean floor. Hess presented a theory, known as “sea floor spreading” to explain the drifting of continents. Upon exploring the surface of the ocean, he found that earth’s crust had been moving. “He suggested that the new ocean crust was created at the ridges, split apart, moved away from the ridges and, later disappeared back into the deep Earth at trenches.”
“Jacques Cousteau created the first underwater habitat for humans and helped stop nuclear waste from being dumped into the Mediterranean Sea. ”(Artzybasheff 6). The quote shows how great Jacques Cousteau was when he took time out of his day to stop nuclear waste from being dumped into the Mediterranean Sea, potentially saving the lives of thousands of innocent animals. Jacques Cousteau wanted to invent a way to breathe underwater furthering his work undersea. Cousteau was determined to show the world, somehow, what mysteries lie beneath the water.
Without the information that was brought back from exploring these lands, Americans would be lost when colonizing the West. There were 59 people and one dog that participated over the course of the expedition, though everyone that joined didn’t make it to the Pacific.

The HMS Beagle set out on its voyage around the globe with Darwin aboard on December 27, 1813. Over the route of the trip, Darwin retrieved a variety of natural specimens, including fossils, birds, and plants. Through experimentation and tough research, he had a remarkable opportunity to observe the principles of geology, zoology, and botany very closely. South America, The Galapagos Archipelago, and The Pacific Island were of certain interest to Darwin. Once Charles Darwin returned to England in 1836, Darwin began to write up his findings in the Journal of Researches, published as part of Captain FitzRoy 's larger narrative and later edited into the Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle.
