Martinez, Karen Professor Smith English 2342-86018 April 18, 2018 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The Sorting Hat “Part of Lord Voldemort lives inside Harry,” (Rowling 2007 686.) In Harry Potter Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry was meant to become a legend. Against all odds, he sets out on an incredible journey to sequentially defeat ultimate adversary Lord Voldemort. However, nothing could have been accomplished if the Sorting Hat, due to Harry’s unique character, would have place him in a different house other than Gryffindor. Gryffindor was Harry’s stepping stone to achieve his destiny through friendship, will and fate. The Sorting Hat took longer than usual to determine Harry’s house placement. “Difficult. The Sorting Hat knew Harry was special; although not ambitious nor cunning, Harry does have this “thirst to prove [himself]” (Rowling & Kay 2015 100.) Harry’s abilities, some he did not know he possessed at first, could pertain to someone typical of a Gryffindor as well as a Slithering. This is because during that fateful night in Godric’s Hollow, where Harry’s parents were killed by Lord Voldemort, he also casts the Killing Curse on Harry. However, the curse bounced back and unwillingly transferred part of his unstable soul onto Harry. As Dumbledore would tell Professor Snape, part of Voldemort’s soul gave Harry some of his powers and abilities “[it] gives him the power of speech with snakes” (Rowling 2007 686.) This is something that is seen again in the Chamber of Secrets “A Parselmouth!” said Ron, “You can talk to snakes!” (Rowling & GrandPré 1999 195.) This was the second time Harry realized he could speak to snakes; an ability he did not know he possessed; first encounter occurred during his first trip to the zoo to celebrate his cousin Dudley Durley’s birthday. Even though Neville and Harry fit the Lost Prophecy “born to those who have thrice defied [Voldemort], born at the seventh month dies…and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not” (Rowling & GrandPré 2003 841,) it was Harry who beared the mark. But Harry’s free will was also crucial into achieving success. “Not Slytherin, not Slyherin” (Rowling & Kay 2015 100) Harry pleaded to the Sorting Hat as he was being placed into a house during his first year, something The Hat took in consideration. Gryffindor enabled Harry to discovered his abilities he possessed, using them to his
The first main idea comes right from the first sentence. Harry states, “[as] young as I was, I knew it was all a lie.” This is a very important thing to keep in mind of how a boy at a young age is able to know that this is not real. This shows that he is an intelligent child. That is until the next line in which he reveals his naïve personality.
This article will also be talking about the book series Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone it was written by J.K. Rowling, this book will be used to prove
No Doubt That Harry Potter Can Slytherin to Campbell’s Journey of the Hero The professor, author, and mythologist known as Joseph Campbell is known for writing the famous book The Hero with a Thousand Faces which contains the ubiquitous storyline known as the monomyth or the Hero’s Journey. This journey is the basic format of almost all stories or myths and how they follow a similar pattern, no matter when or by whom it was written. According to Christopher Vogler, “the Hero’s Journey is infinitely flexible, capable of endless variation without sacrificing any of its magic, and it will outlive us all,” (20).
Due to my risky courageous attitude, the Sorting Hat would know I belong in Gryffindor. Gryffindor is where I would be most happy at. The reason why the Sorting Hat would put me in Gryffindor, Is because I am brave and courageous. For that matter I strongly dislike scary things, Such as movies or scary halloween costumes.
The results of evidence found for epic quest, Harry has to try and get to the Sorcerer’s stone, before Snape and or Voldemort get to it. This was proven by his characteristics shown, as an archetypal
(pg.14) Growing up at the Dursley has kept Harry humble, able to look out for himself, and able to tell the rotten people. Then comes along “the call to adventure” in the form of owl sending invitation to Hogwarts, somewhere Harry Potter never heard about. The Dursley refuse “the call to adventure” for Harry Potter and they go to extreme length to deny him “the call to adventure” but it seems like hiding in a cabin on a island cannot stop “the call to adventure” because Hagrid comes along and gives Harry Potter the choice of coming to the “special
Classism At first sight, the class system in the Harry Potter books may appear simple and straightforward. The main clash of classes seems to be between muggles and wizards. However, even the wizarding world of Harry Potter is strictly stratified into classes. There is a hierarchical division in terms of descent.
Harry Potter’s narrative follows Campbell’s pattern. In Harry’s case, he is living with his Muggle relatives, when letters from Hogwarts arrive to notify him that he has been accepted to the wizarding school (cf. Ahmed, 2012,
Harry’s life isn’t very bright in the beginning of our story; he is forced to sleep in a cupboard under the stairs, never gets anything for his birthdays (except a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks, and coat hangers ) and he is constantly being bullied by his 12 year old nephew, Dudley. One fine morning, Harry starts receiving strange letters adressed to his cupboard and is rescued by a giant man. Harry discovers his parents hadn’t died in a car crash (as his uncle and aunt always told him), but that they were wizards, and that he’s one as well. Though that’s not all; Harry isn’t just an ordinary wizard, but a famous one. The reason behind this is when, At the time of Harrys’ birth, a dark wizard roamed the country, and this wizard so happened to be at his prime (strongest).
Harry is still only 12 years old and growing up, and in the end he’s a bit worried about some similar traits between him and Voldemort, the most evil wizard during this time. But at page 245 Dumbledore, the headmaster at school tells him that ”It is our choices, Harry, that shows what we truly are, fare more than our
In this essay, I'll tell you about how wizards and witches are sorted into houses at Hogwarts. When the students first come in, some maybe possess ideas about where they're going to go and to others, it doesn't matter. Regardless, all the students are sorted using the same process, the Sorting Hat, and the Sorting Ceremony. The Sorting Ceremony happens when new students enroll in Hogwarts and find out which of the houses fits them the best.
Chapter: 3 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in the Harry Potter arrangement, which is composed by J. K. Rowling. The story rotates around Harry 's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Around the begin of the term an arrangement of messages on the dividers of the school 's passages begin showing up with message of caution that the "Load of Secrets" has been opened and that the "beneficiary of Slytherin" would execute all understudies who are from Muggle or are not-from immaculate Magic families. A few reports and overviews expressed that individual character is a solid subject in the book, and that it addresses issues of prejudice through the treatment of non-enchanted, non-human and non-living characters.
In the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry first lives his life as a muggle not knowing anything about
The Sorting Hat’s songs (of 1991, 1994, and 1995, respectively) paint a rather negative view of the House of Green and Silver. Though, do the readers of J.K. Rowling’s famed Harry Potter series actually understand the infamous house? Cunning.
