The Hate u Give The Hate u Give, written by Angie Thomas is a book that explores themes of racism, hate, and grief. The book is titled this because it reflects the central theme of the overall story. The story follows a girl named Starr whose childhood friend is murdered in an act of police brutality. Following this, Starr begins to confront the hate within her community to try to take a stand against it. Throughout the book, the author explores the variety of ways hate can tear communities apart. Exploring how people can not even realize the destruction hate and violence have done to their communities as they've gone numb to it. For example, the author shows that the hate in Starrs community is just one piece of a massive puzzle of systematic oppression and discrimination. Another reason for the title of the book could be police brutality, and the effect it leaves on black communities. As Starrs childhood friend is killed in an act of police brutality, it causes her to grieve and then expose the hatred within her community. To further explain, The Hate u Give is titled this in an effort to draw attention to the variety of ways hate and violence are normalized within African American society, and how no one is doing anything to prevent it. The book shows how the media sometimes contribute to this culture built around hate. The book uses intense imagery to in detail explain the at some times overwhelming emotions that characters can feel, for example when she testifies in court and has to retell the events leading up to Khalil's death. One more reason that the book, The hate u Give, is given this title is to emphasize the importance to stand against social injustice in your community, and to stand up for what’s right. I this is a reason because in the book, Starr speaks out against social injustice within her community, and could allude to the reasoning behind why the book is titled, The Hate u
