There is no doubt that student’s academic performance is very crucial at every level. Academic performance, which is measured by the examination results, is one of the major goals of a school. Hoyle (1986) argued that schools are established with the aim of imparting knowledge and skills to those who go through them and behind all this is the idea of enhancing good academic performance. However, education stakeholders have expressed their concerns over the poor academic performance of students in primary which is a widespread phenomenon. Worldwide there is increasing efforts made to improve students’ academic achievement at all levels in the education sector.

1.5.1 Research Objectives of the study
The objectives of the research are:
 To identify the leadership styles of headmasters in primary school;
 To investigate to what extent the leadership styles of the headmasters have an influence on students’ academic performance in primary school;
 To examine educators’ perceptions on headmasters’ leadership style;
 To assess how the leadership styles of the Head teachers influence the students’ academic performance
 To make recommendations for the improvement of students’ academic performance on the basis of an analysis of leadership styles.

 What are the leadership styles employed by headmasters in primary schools?
 What are the perceptions of educators about the headmasters’ leadership styles?
