Throughout history, health has been a significant concern in our society and is an integral part of humanity. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as ´´a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’’ The power to achieve good health is in one’s own hands in the Western world. Maintaining good health is the individual’s responsibility and should be top priority for all human beings in developed countries, we have after all only one body and one life. However, Studies have shown that moderation is the key to good health. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) regular physical activity and a balanced diet has significant benefits for health; it contributes to prevention of several types of diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, some types of cancer and leads to a healthy lifestyle. It is crucial to have a balance of good exercise and good diet to obtain good health. To maintain good health and good shape does not need to be complicated, time consuming or expensive, it is relatively simple and pleasing if one has the right mindset and outlook. Even if it is not excessively difficult to maintain good health, it does nonetheless require some effort and determination.
Diet is one of the essentialities to achieve good health; consumption of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, yogurt and eggs helps minimizing health related problems. Scientific studies have shown that consumption of healthy foods and exercising minimizes health related problems and leads to a healthy lifestyle. Each food has its own benefit for health: vegetables and fruits are filled with vitamins and reduce the risk of heart diseases, high-fiber foods such as beans and whole grains increases feelings of fullness and thus enhances weight loss, protein-rich foods such as eggs and fish provide energy and boost the immune system. Physical activity is another important factor to achieve good health: it reduces for instance blood pressure and benefits many parts of the body including the bones and the heart. At the end, I will suggest methods to solve the health inequality. Definitions of ‘Health’ ‘Absence of diseases’ is a common definition of health within our society. However, it cannot completely express the definition of health since health is affected by many factors but not only biological and physiological. An official definition of health by the World Health Organization is, ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The enjoyment of the highest attainment of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, without distinction of race, religion, political beliefs or economic and social conditions’ (World Health Organization, 1948).
A society in which all people live long, healthy lives is the vision that Healthy People 2020 has set for themselves. Healthy People 2020 was developed under the leadership of the Federal Interagency Workgroup (FIW). Healthy People 2020 is the framework of an exhaustive collaborative process among the U.S. Department of Health and Human services (HHS) and other federal agencies, public stakeholders, and the advisory committee. Healthy People 2020 provides specific and important areas of emphasis where action must take place in the United States to achieve better health by the year 2020.
Prior to completing the wellness self-assessment tool, I desired to work on the physical dimension of my life. When I was younger I used to be extremely active. In the past 6-8 years however, my physical activity level has decreased significantly, to the point where it could be considered non-existent. After completing the self-assessment, it was more evident to me that this was an area I needed to improve on. I am not surprised that both the physical and play dimensions of my wellness are weighted the lowest (see below).
Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. With growing body sizes and serious medical problems associated with obesity, it is a problem that needs to be addressed and changed.
“Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” (Hardy, 2006). The Greeks followed this idea by the philosopher Hippocrates, but today’s society does not take the message seriously. A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking. A lot of teens and college students eat snacks that are not healthy such as chips, pop, candy, etc.
In short, the biological model of health is mainly defined from the absence of disease, from the model that is well-matched with positive meanings in relation to balance of normal functioning. The social model health is actually a positive state of well-being and wholeness linked with however this is not mainly explained from the non-existence of disease, physical, mental impairment and illness (Gross, 2010). Overall the concepts of ill health and health are not balanced. Non-existences of disease might be part of health, however health is considered more than the “absence of disease”.
It may surprise you that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank, at least 400 million people lack access to essential health services. They said, at least 6 percent of people in 37 low and middle income countries are living in poverty because they must spend the money for health. Health care services is the most importance thing that we need because it is not only for improve the health but also through individual behaviour and lifestyle choices such as quitting smoking, eating the nutritious food and living a healthy lifestyles.
