Did you know that approximately 40-60% of elementary school girls between the ages 6-12 years old begin to express concerns about their weight or body shape? (“Get The Facts On Eating Disorders”). Demi Lovato the successful star with an amazing body and healthy eating, didn’t always do what was right for her and her body. She suffered from bulimia and self mutilation at a young age, which was her way of dealing with her emotions (Johnston). With all the money and fame and great achievements, a new beginning awaits her. “I have come to realize that just making yourself happy is more important. Never be ashamed of what you feel. You have the right to feel any emotion that you want, and do what makes you happy” (Lovato qtd. in Seventeen). She has finally found peace. Although having healthy eating habits is an important part of the recovery, working out allows you to begin to appreciate every inch of your body. You begin to realize what every muscle in your body does. “Exercising has been so important for my recovery, both physically and mentally” (Mickle). My little sister who looks at herself and asks “Well, why don’t I look like the rest of the girls in my class? I want to be skinny.” I never though she would ever have these thoughts. But the reality is many young boys and girls do, and Demi Lovato’s story has showed many, including myself to embrace our curves and that change doesn’t happen in just one day, you have to work for what you want. Demi has used her story as a positive message for women and young girls around the world. She has helped so many conquer this problem by giving some of the profits from Devonne by Demi to the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program (Mickle). The Lovato Scholarship helps cover some of the expenses of individuals struggling with mental health and/or addiction issues. Therefore, although Demi Lovato has had some ups and downs, this has not stopped her. I hope others use this as an example to know they aren’t alone and can achieve what ever they put their minds

Thirdly, we can discuss the healthy and suitable way to achieve your own personal appearance goals. Fourth, we can change up the media and celebrity culture. By allowing a wider variety of figures into this industry it will allow women around the world to feel comfortable in their own skin. Fifth, we can eliminate the comparison and competition we have with one another to “look the best” and “be the sexier women.” Lastly, and this goes to all women, we must learn to have respect in ourselves and look after ourselves and one another to be beautiful individuals in our own, unique way (Ramsey).
Men and women nowadays are starting to lose self-confidence in themselves and their body shape, which is negatively impacting the definition of how beauty and body shape are portrayed. “...97% of all women who had participated in a recent poll by Glamour magazine were self-deprecating about their body image at least once during their lives”(Lin 102). Studies have shown that women who occupy most of their time worrying about body image tend to have an eating disorder and distress which impairs the quality of life. Body image issues have recently started to become a problem in today’s society because of social media, magazines, and television.

Meaghan Ramsey's TED Talk "Why thinking you're ugly is bad for you" is a powerful speech about low body confidence. Ramsey talks about how society's pressure to be perfect is one of the main reason for young girls' (and boys') low body confidence and how these feelings of low esteem can impact their lives and futures. I chose to analyze this speech because I have experienced low body confidence and I have felt those feelings of low self-esteem. In Meaghan Ramsey's speech "Why thinking you're ugly is bad for you", she discusses how low body confidence is undermining academic achievement, damaging health, and limiting the economic potential of today's youth who are growing up in a world of social media. Ramsey has a strong start to her speech, using a photo and a story about her niece to gain the attention of the audience.
