The Company has sought beneficial uses for all waste globally through their Sustainability Process, which has a robust network of Regional Sustainability Coordinators who share best practices in resource management and recycling waste. For example, a factory in Jacksonville, Florida implemented a recycling project which has diverted approximately 50% of its solid waste to recycling, the equivalent of 3.7 million pounds per year or approximately 185 trips by an average garbage truck. This was accomplished by separating the trash into plastics, foils and routine trash waste streams.

Buying products from developing countries creates economic benefits for those countries but many countries do not have the regulation or infrastructure to protect workers’ rights. To combat this issue, they are increasing supply chain transparency where they will publish names and addresses of the factories from where it sources. Businesses choose their suppliers carefully and in high risk areas they engage the suppliers regularly. Audit programs are carried out. Factories are inspected to make sure that they comply with the fire safety and building safety regulations.

Ravisankar begins his essay by talking about how consumers are constantly emphasizing finding lower prices and that means using sweatshop labor. The problem he identifies is as consumers in Western countries try to find lower prices, we are not helping sweatshop laborers escape their low standard of living. Ravisankar assumes his readers are unaware consumers in Western countries. His purpose in this essay is to educate his readers about the problem of brands’ exploiting their workers. In order to accomplish this purpose, Ravisankar appeals mainly to consumers to pay a higher price to help “improve the lives of sweatshop workers.”
Up until the early 20th century, American labor laws did not protect employees and work environments were not monitored for unsafe conditions. Factories were allowed to run without proper fire exits, ventilation, pay, breaks and even children were forced into labor. These unsafe conditions came crashing down just before the end of the workday on March 25th, 1911 in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. In just under 30 minutes, 146 lives perished (Benin). Today, we call these factories “sweatshops” and they are primarily found in countries that lack laws enforcing proper working conditions.

Cases like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and the factory that collapsed in Bangladesh, killing over one thousand people, ever happen. Those who keep their escaping employees cooped up when the building they are working in is about to implode should be tried for mass killings. How can somebody be so selfish, and let profit get in the way of thousands of lives ending? This is a violation of Human Rights.

These are the words of Raveena Aulakh, a Toronto Star reporter who worked undercover at a Dhaka, Bangladesh garment factory. The extreme environment illustrated in the reporter’s account develops an image that is known as a sweatshop, which is commonly defined as a shop where workers are employed to manually produce goods at extremely low wages for long hours under substandard conditions.

Abstract The global garment industry, worth more than $400 billion dollars today, is a very lucrative industry. Garment factories in developing countries working for retailers in developed ones shows how efficiency is increased and every party can benefit through outsourcing of labour from developed countries; retailers and consumers get clothes at cheaper prices while employment is provided to areas plagued with poverty. However, it is evident that many of these garment factories are sweatshops, which are factories and businesses that violates local or international labour laws, such as providing workers with atrocious working conditions, providing minimal compensation or even employing child labour.
