Reducing Solid Landfill Waste: Heinz have been focused on finding ways to reduce, reuse or recycle waste.

The Company has sought beneficial uses for all waste globally through their Sustainability Process, which has a robust network of Regional Sustainability Coordinators who share best practices in resource management and recycling waste. For example, a factory in Jacksonville, Florida implemented a recycling project which has diverted approximately 50% of its solid waste to recycling, the equivalent of 3.7 million pounds per year or approximately 185 trips by an average garbage truck. This was accomplished by separating the trash into plastics, foils and routine trash waste streams.

The company have found that effective management of the transportation network is one of the keys to reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in transportation. Buying products from developing countries creates economic benefits for those countries but many countries do not have the regulation or infrastructure to protect workers’ rights. To combat this issue, they are increasing supply chain transparency where they will publish names and addresses of the factories from where it sources. Businesses choose their suppliers carefully and in high risk areas they engage the suppliers regularly. Audit programs are carried out. Factories are inspected to make sure that they comply with the fire safety and building safety regulations.

• Community contributions: - Wesfarmers and its businesses contribute to the strength and vibrancy of the communities in which they operate by assisting a range of community organisations in ways that best fit with their core business and geographic spread. Wesfarmers is a member of the London Benchmarking Group (LBG) and they use its methodology to measure and report the contributions towards the community.
• Government cooperation: - Wesfarmers have created liaisons with both state and federal governments to look into various issues like as retail trading hours, carbon regulation
