The thing is, they will always question themselves, they will question themselves until they believe they accomplished their goals. Furthermore, finding a college without a certain career in mind is difficult. Even if someone does have their mind set on a career it’s still challenging, because they don 't know if that college is best for them.

I have always wanted to be a surgeon since I was a kid. Doctors were treated like gods in my home country, Ethiopia. I was a shy little boy who dreamt big in my neighborhood and people would make fun of my goal due to the fact that there were no doctors in our neighborhood. They believed that I was not smart and strong enough to be a doctor. Besides my mother and aunt, nobody knew what I was capable of.
Career counselors must be comfortable enough with clients to establish a working alliance that will enable the counselor to effectively listen to and meet the career development needs of the students. I believe that they must have the skills to address gender and racial discrimination and create a safe space for students to share their concerns and struggles. By seeing someone who is like them who are successful can be a great motivation and encouragement for minority students. Being able to complete one class at a time was the exact pace I needed to be successful without the worry of having assignments due in many different classes at the same time.
, I found my time as a student worker in Veteran Services becoming more fulfilling daily than my studies in Information Systems. As my responsibilities on campus grew, so did the resolve that my place was not only helping veterans but assisting all students who are working to build a solid future. I began to truly understand the broad nature of the university’s vision statement “to educate and graduate the best prepared, confident leaders”. The lessons that I’ve learned throughout the course made me more confident when assisting job seekers and students with selecting their prospective careers. From the very beginning, this course has taught me how to use my available resources when assisting with career choices. Those resourceful tools include the Occupational Outlook Handbook and Fastweb. With these tools, I learned out to effectively select a career, outline the expected job vacancy, find funding for secondary education, and access scholarship opportunities. During the group presentations, I learned about the foundations of career development, ethic and legal guidelines, assessments, and how to prepare for work; as well as how to effectively counsel in business settings and private practices.
