History is full of heros but, what makes these people heros. Is it their bravery on the battlefield, the honor they give to their family, or their intelligence. Much of this is true in the time of ancient Greece. Although Grecian heroes give the gods some credit for their gifts they are often concerned about bringing the glory and honor upon themselves or their family; however, Biblical hero's want to bring honor and glory to God. Odysseus is a hero to the Greeks but not from a Biblical standpoint because of his arrogance toward his intelligence, perseverance, and courage.
Odysseus is also recognized as a great hero as well. This is because of his great victories during the Trojan war. One time during the story where a king realizes that it is Odysseus was on Phaeacia when King Alcinous recognizes him and offers him help. Odysseus is also a humble man. Although sometimes his ego occasionally gets in the way, he still does deeds for the sake of doing them, not for fame.
The definition of a hero has evolved over time. According to Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, the first definition of a hero is, “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.” In The Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus is a hero according to this definition. Odysseus is a hero because he used his strength to overcome tough circumstances. Odysseus battles many mortals, immortals, monsters, and even gods.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
In the first novel The Glass Castle, the father, Rex Walls is the one who creates the drama in his family. He is a negative influence for the children and his actions are unacceptable and because of his action are what creates the drama. For exam-ple at one point in the novel Rex tries to run Rose over with his car while she is pregnant and his kids witness everything, Jeanette states, “We shot forward toward Mom, who screamed and jumped out of the way. Dad turned around and went for her again” (Walls 43). Since Rex is not being sensible with the situation, and is acting poorly it creates a dysfunction in the family be-cause everyone is constantly fighting.
Usually, epic heroes share common character traits such as courage, self control, fearless, daring. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is my belief that Odysseus is heroic mostly because his is courageous and fearless. For example, he wasn’t panicking when he was against the cyclops, he was thinking of what to do so they can escape the cave.
Was Odysseus a hero? The definition of hero - “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In Homer's Odyssey Odysseus was a major part in the victory of the Trojan war, he was the one who came up with the idea of the Trojan Horse which should make him a hero only for that. All Odysseus wanted to do was to get home but some obstacles were placed in front of him preventing him from getting home, yes it was bad decisions that led these obstacles to be put there but everyone makes mistakes. But instead of falling to these obstacles he persevered and got home to his Mom, wife and son.
A hero to me, for the longest time, is someone who did something epic. Something that changed the world, something that impacted our lives in a positive way. Never did I once stop to think about the smaller things that made someone a hero or the virtues that these heroes had in mind that mad them what they were, until I read Homer’s The Odyssey. I started to give more thought on how commitment, sacrifice and loyalty all came into play to make Odysseus the great leader that he was portrayed as, at the same time I questioned if these values, when placed in the “wrong hands” would make one into a bad and morally corrupt person.
While most Ancient Greek societies clearly saw Odysseus as a hero, many modern audiences would reject his hero status. In most Ancient Greek societies, Odysseus fits the profile of a Greek hero, for he is equipped with great strength, courage, and is favored by many gods. Odysseus used his great skills and his
A hero is typically someone who is respected for his or her remarkable achievements and assets. Most People define a hero as someone who does something incredible out of the virtuousness of his or her heart.
