The term nutraceutical was invented from two words ‘nutrition’ and ‘pharmaceutical’ in 1989 by Stephen Defelice, founder and chairman of foundation for innovation in medicine, an American organization which promotes medical health [1, 2, 3, 4]. He stated, “a nutraceutical is any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides health or medical benefits, along with the prevention and treatment of diseases”. These products can range from dietary supplements, isolated nutrients and specific diets to genetically engineered designer foods as well as herbal products [1, 5].
