In the 17th century, Havana became one of the Caribbean 's main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards. The Cuban capital city in the Caribbean previously known as San Cristobal de La Habana preserves vivid examples of colonial architecture that started to become famous by the end of the 16th century and is characterized by unique features with a strong Spanish influence.

Over the past years, in Cuba it has been difficult for the heritage authorities to stop the action of many new developers and investors, both national and foreign. The reason for their position is basically that they really do not understand the merits of this kind of heritage and believe that they are free to transform it or eliminate it in order to install their new functions, hotels, shops, banks, offices and others. Although they represent a majority among the investment sector, there are other entities which have appreciated the advantages of

On July 21st, I visited the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or “El Morro” in San Juan, Puerto Rico. El Morro is a fort built by the Spanish during the mid 1500s, and was used to defend Puerto Rico from outside forces. The fort was attacked by the English and Dutch in the 1590s, and suffered significant damage from the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American war, where the lighthouse was destroyed but rebuilt again.

Yet these global influences are completed by indigenous local food stuffs - yucca, malanga and boniato are local root vegetables routinely used in Cuban food.

Tourists are not seeing the side where the native families are struggling to get by. Are they trying to persuade the reader to adopt a new belief or habit, or to stop doing something? Jamaica Kincaid is trying to persuade the readers of her essay to understand why tourism is such a bad thing.
