Jaden Bow 1/26/23 ELA 2nd Research Paper Rough Draft Hermes and Mercury’s History By Jaden Bow There are lots of things people do know about Hermes and Mercury but one fun fact is they are the same god just Greek and Roman. This research paper will take a deeper look into the history of the 2 gods. Also, Hermes and Mercury are famous because of Hermes' origin, Mercury, and how they tie together. Hermes Origin When Hermes was first born he turned himself 4 with his abilities, now that he had the ability to walk he made sandals out of sticks and stones to make his steps quieter. Because of this AncientGreece.org says, “He was a thief from his cradle.” (AncientGreece). As Hermes went to steal Apollo’s cows he made more sandals out of sticks and stones that made the steps of the cows reverse making the prints look like they go backwards. Hermes told Apollo’s cattle keeper to keep it a secret in exchange for 1 cow. Hermes later came back disguised and asked him who stole the cattle in exchange for 1 cattle and 1 bull, The Keeper told him the secret and as Hermes heard it he turned him into a rock for his disobedience. It is believed that as the Roman form of Hermes, Mercury and him had the same story at birth of how they stole Apollo’s cattle, made the lyre, and traded it for the herd of cows so therefore Apollo was god of music and Hermes and Mercury were gods of Herds. Both The Odyssey and The Bible have their own gods, but they are a lot more different then they might seem. The Odyysey’s gods are far from perfect in so many ways, but the God of the Bible is perfect in absolutely every way. But, there are many similarities and differences between the gods of The Odyssey and the God of the Bible. Although there are many differences, there are also some similarities.
Throughout mythological history there has been a handful of gods that would identify as trickster gods. Two of them stand out more than the others. They both share same similarities yet have distinctive differences. Hermes and Coyote are the two gods that have similar aspects like being lovers, heroes and creators. Coyote is a trickster of the Indian mythology and could shape shift, while Hermes is a god of Greek mythology and was a man who could fly.
Ares and Athena, two gods with seemingly similar aspects but polar opposite personalities. They are both gods of battle, but at their core, they represent two different views of the battlefield. Ares is the god of war and represents the gore of battle as well as its depraving ability to turn us back into bloodthirsty animals. Where Athena represents the tactical wisdom and even grace of battle. These two gods have many characteristics that are very similar and traits that set them worlds apart.
Then came the island filled with Cyclops. Odysseus and his men explored the island and came up to a cave. Odysseus took twelve of his best men and told the others to stay with the ship. When he went into the cave the Cyclops was not there, but tending to his sheep. The men saw cheeses and pens filled with lambs in the cave.
When one hears the word Mercury they think of the beautiful red planet neighbored to Earth in the galaxy, but did you know that the planet is named after the Greek God, Hermes. The Romans named the planets after the most important gods so the fastest planet was named after the fastest god. Hermes, also known as Mercury, is the son of Zeus and nymph Maia. He is the god of commerce, athletes, trickery and inventions and is known for numerous talents and being apart of multiple greek stories. Hermes was a very helpful god who was known for his thieving, and his speed.
Hermes is the god of boundaries and transition, Hermes was known to be quick and cunning and had the ability to freely move between the mortal and divine worlds. It is this that made him a look bringing messages to the gods and intercessor between mortal and divine. Hermes played a part in the infamous love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. After Eurydice is granted one day on earth with her husband, it is Hermes who escorts her back to the underworld.
Soon after that, Odysseus and his men arrive on an island that is home to Helios’ prize cows. Multiple people have warned Odysseus not to kill the cows, so he does everything he can to prevent his men from eating the beautiful creatures. When Odysseus falls asleep, the crew mutinies once again and they “[slaughter] and [skin] the cattle,” enraging Helios and causing the gods to destroy their ship when they set off to sea (271). Hermes: A Kind, Strategic Thief Throughout multiple mythical stories, Hermes possesses several different characteristics. He is known primarily as the messenger of the gods; however, he appears in several stories performing different tasks. Throughout mythology, Hermes possesses both negative and positive personality traits; he is portrayed as a cunning thief, an intelligent, strategic god and a respectful, kind warrior during the Trojan War. Thieves often ask for Hermes’ guidance, as he was a thief from the first day he was born.
His holy animal is also a goat because he is a nymph. He is often depicted as a part goat with a human face, horns from his four head, legs of a goat, and a weird nose and pair of ears. His appearance is very strange and unlike most of the other gods and goddesses in mythology.
Hermes was born in Arcadia inside of a cave which was mountain Cyllene. In his childhood, he stole cattle from Apollo to use to create his lyre Hermes was a troublesome kid growing up. His father was Zeus and mother was Maia and uncle was Poseidon also had a step brother named Apollo. Hermes had a son Pan who was half man and half goat. After Hermes was born he wondered off out of his cave where he was born, he encountered a turtle which he used the turtles shell to create his lyre.
The Resemblance of Gods and Humans Throughout all religions, gods have always been seen as superior in every way possible. The division between humans and gods has always been prevalent and prominent. However, when the actions and motives of these gods are truly analyzed, it will become evident that the gods of Greek Mythology merely behave as humans with supernatural powers.
