In the story The Odyssey, Odysseus males many allies and enemies while trying to get back home. In the Epic The Odyssey by Homer, the hero Odysseus is trying to get back to the land Ithaca from the Trojan War. For the past ten years, Odysseus has been facing obstacles such as monsters, vengeful gods, and living god 's while traveling back home. For another ten years, Odysseus was stuck in the war against the Trojans who lost. On the way home, Odysseus has been tested on his ability to survive and be a good hero. While Odysseus has been gone the kingdom has lost hope that Odysseus is alive. Men have started raiding the kingdom hoping to win Penelope 's heart and rule the kingdom. While Odysseus was shooting his bow in a disguise to win the marriage of Penelope, Odysseus shot a man to show that this is not ok, “Odysseus’ arrow hot him under the chin and punched up the feathers through his throat,” (1234-1235). Odysseus killed a man for trying to win his wife and take over his throne when his son should have taken the throne. This matters because he is showing himself to the kingdom after his long adventure not taking this lightly. Also, when Odysseus and his men were trapped in a cave with a Cyclops who wouldn’t let Odysseus’ men out, Odysseus stepped up and “the way they make soft iron hale and hard just so that eyeball hissed around the spike,”(388-387). Odysseus stabbed the Cyclops in the eye making the eyeball hiss and making the Cyclops blind. This is important because, with the olive branch making the Cyclops blind Odysseus; men were able to escape. An example is, after twenty years he is still determined to return home, “I am at home, for I am he. I bore adversities but in the twentieth year I am a shore in my own land,” (1140-1143). Odysseus was always determined to go back to his kingdom and be with his wife after twenty years, Without determination to go back to everything he loves he wouldn’t have been able to go through every obstacle that was in his way, and lead his men to freedom when they were trapped. After the Cyclops finds Odysseus and his men he wanted to know where their ship was so the Cyclops could destroy it and not have any chance of them escaping,”Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth trembled, broke it upon the rocks at your land’s end,” (273-276). Odysseus is determined to not let the Cyclops find his ship and destroy it. Odysseus is willing to do anything to get back on that ship and not let the son of Poseidon find it.
