Who is the man who is willing to fight for ten years to return to his family stopping at nothing? Who is the man who never ceases in his fight to return home, no matter how difficult his decisions or how grueling his trials are. That man is Odysseus. The Odyssey is an epic poem in which a hero, Odysseus, embarks on a thrilling quest to return back to his home and family in Ithaca after succeeding in the Trojan War. In his several journeys, he faces several hardships that delay this goal.
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
Odysseus was trying to go back home to go to his family and friends and become the king again in his throne as he deserves. Odysseus was treated like a hero when he, came back from his journey because he fought his way back home just like a hero and a good warrior. Odysseus, also was the king in Ithaca he was ruling there until he left and left his son in charged. Another reason that he is a hero that he left his throne, so he can go and defend his people.
“Like strength is felt from hope, and from despair” (Homer). Odysseus -the reigning king of Ithaca- took part in the Trojan War for 10 long years. He then ventured on for another 10 years to return to to his homeland of Ithaca. On and on he raced to go home but was challenged with many challenges along his journey. Three major events were when Odysseus got caught in the land of the cyclopes, the journey through the ventures, and when he challenges the suitors to a duel to win back his home and wife.

He proves that he is a great leader and isn’t easily affected by conflict. He says, “[I] shouted out to him in my rage, ‘Cyclops, if anyone asks you who it was that put your eye out and spoiled your beauty, say it was the valiant warrior Odysseus…’” (96-98). As he and the remainder of his crew are leaving the island, he yells back to Polyphemus to make sure the Cyclops knows exactly who he is. Odysseus additionally shows he can easily trick others.
Homer’s the Odyssey is a classic example of how separation can affect a man’s loyalty and how proving oneself can restore reputation. Odysseus keeps his respect and loyalty toward everyone he befriends. Odysseus is a very loyal man and knows how to keep his promises even through his twenty year journey away from home. Odysseus goes off to fight with the Greeks during the trojan war which happens to take nine years, he then spends a year in Greece and it takes him ten years to finally get back home.

A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, bravery, a strong warrior, a great leader, or their cunning to save the lives others. In the epic poem The Odyssey, written across generations and spoken by Homer, Odysseus is the king of the island Ithaca. He is struggling through a ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. Odysseus must battle, magical creatures and stand against the fury of the gods. Odysseus must either let his fate fall in the hands of death or prove himself to be a true hero.

The epic starts off two years after the Trojan War, which Odysseus fought in for ten years. Now, Odysseus must journey home, which takes him another ten years. Odysseus faces challenges while going home and has some guidance along the way.

Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.

Odysseus was away from his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope for 20 years, and he never threw in the towel. Odysseus never gave up, and neither did Telemachus or Penelope.
