Can you imagine being under the pressure to be a hero, or trust someone who failed you, or even pressuring yourself about being powerless? In the Percy Jackson series, the characters Percy, Nico di Angelo, and Hazel experience pressures that sometimes crumble their emotions and make them lose trust in themselves. These pressures change the book because they can make characters lose trust in themselves and lose battles. In conclusion, character views shape the series because of how they can change characters on the inside and outside.
When one thinks of a hero they normally imagine a famous athlete or a movie star, but it’s not always about one’s popularity, it can also be because of how they help society. A hero is a person or protagonist included in a literary work who, when put in front of danger withstands adversity by being brave and resourceful, often sacrificing their well-being for the good of their people. Overcoming obstacles may be one of the biggest difficulties that people face, just because of the fact that many chose to simply quit when life gets hard. A person becomes a hero when they are able to overcome these difficulties and accomplish the tasks that are presented to them no matter how straining they may be. Many believe that “that heroism comes naturally to some, and others can learn altruism using methods such as compassion” (Banham 312).
Does the world around us force one to form opinions about others that may be unjust and harmful? The danger of stereotyping many times leads to individuals falling prey to believing that they may fit in a certain category or group thus forcing the individual to acclimate to negative stereotyping. “The stereotype hanging over the individual then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. He begins to see himself no longer as an individual and clings to the negative aspects of the group in which society has categorized him” (Duczeminski). By society not adapting to a disabled person and their exceptionality, it causes the disabled individual to succumb to said stereotypes.
Hitler believed he was doing what was necessary in order to gain power as Macbeth thought killing everyone in his path would allow him to stay in power. However, by killing all of those people he made the wrong decision and in turn not only killed innocent people but was affected by mental issues that later sought to the end of their “career.” Moral values can have pure intentions; however, it can easily be altered with the opinions of others and cause one to make ill-fated decisions ultimately showing the true stature of
During the Great Depression money and jobs were a difficult thing to attain, instead, what Frank Lucas does is steal money and pursue immoral acts to achieve his desires. This ties in with Frank Lucas in the film because he does corruptive actions, like the one’s in this quote, that prove his character becomes destroyed by immorality. It is evident that Gatsby and Lucas great aspirations destruct each of the character’s nature. It is evident that Gatsby’s emotional conscious is demolished because he does not care that he is enacting illegal work for his dream. Tom accuses him of pursuing his unlawful acts and from Gatsby’s reply he shows no guilt.
If people want to feel powerful and controlling, they may be cruel to others to acquire more authority. In our world, many wish to have more power in their life, but do not know how to achieve it or are too afraid to obtain it. Those who do succeed, however, may accomplish their power in an unsuitable way. As witnessed in the book, many characters, such as Curley and Crooks, are ridiculed or discriminated for different reasons. Because of this, they both use their desperation for power against Lennie, viciously using him for their needs.
The road to a fatal outcome can be observed through many different qualities but excessive ambition is one of the main downfalls for most of us in society. Evil motivation due to uncontrollable and unnecessarily high ambition produces difficult obstacles in our lives. We could also become blind to making the right and moral decisions when our ambition is unrestrained. Additionally, all of the paths and routes for immoderate ambition leads to destruction and disorder. Another important note to keep in mind is that chaos and complications will be rooted from not only extravagant ambition but also poor decision making.
“My skin has betrayed me”. To me self-love is one of the most important things, if people don’t love their own skin then they don’t wanna be in it. To the world, self-love is a rare thing. These days people believe they aren’t worth it. Everyone has insecurities, but in our day and time, those insecurities are exploited to tear us down which makes them hard to avoid.
H. P. Lovecraft once said “the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”. He is implying that one may fear the thought of change but is tired of one's old way of living. Many people can feel trapped and buried with tradition, emotions, and general way of life. Many people are scared of change but do not feel like it will be a positive change. An individual can be overwhelmed by tradition and may crave for change.
Michelangelo, the great Renaissance artist, once said, “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too like, and achieving our mark.” This quote means that most people have a greater fear in succeeding at an easy task than failing at a more challenging one. This is very true in the opinion of many. Most individuals want challenge, and want to avoid taking the easy way out. When the latter happens, they may feel ashamed.
They (including George and Hazel) had an instinct that it was wrong, but no one was willing to break out of it. However, Harrison did it. Even though the result was not successful, at least he tried. I personally think that putting into action is more important than just thinking of it. Therefore, his effort is worthy of being a hero.
I am disgusted by you. I am amazed by your ignorance, lack of direction, lack of common sense and you are the reason that humanity has its flaws. I don’t accept you, and your worlds of closed-minded thinking and being “the best”. You are not "cool." You are not respected.
Some may also argue that trying something new does not benefit people in any way because the fear of failure discourages people from attempting anything new. These people see failure as a synonym for shame, dishonor, and worthlessness. However, people do not need to fear failure because in reality, it brings about the drive and motivation to do better. If everybody knew this, nobody would fear failure, but rather, embrace it.
I believe that a hero should possess the skills to fight for a what they believe in whether their belief is good or bad. They should be recognized at some point in time and praised for their actions even if their actions were just speaking up. They should possess courage and bravery to do what they think is right. People think that a hero is someone who has superpowers or fights crime but that isn't fully true, anyone can turn any qualities they have into qualities a hero has as long as they know the risks of what they are trying to do because some people may consider someone to be a hero while other people think they aren't a hero. I believe that Odysseus is a hero based on opinion.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
