Every culture from the beginning of recorded history to the present has told tales of heroes accomplishing great deeds to the amazement of all. Heroes exist in a variety of mediums from literature to modern cinematic features. Beowulf possessed incredible strength, Luke Skywalker demonstrated mastery of “the force”, and Harry Potter used magic to defeat his adversaries. Heroic tales permeate throughout modern society in every form of entertainment. Modern man can relate to the figure of the hero as they symbolize how life lessons may be learned. The morals held by these heroes and their actions to uphold those same morals serve as entertainment and also a demonstrative tool. The legend of King Arthur shares many of the same concepts as the movie Star Wars. The only true differences between the two stories is the setting and language used. Heroes are defined by many characteristics and experiences. Traits such as courage and selflessness, or the adventure he embarks on could show that one is a true hero. Rob Reiner’s movie “The Princess Bride” contains characters which possess qualities that are of an archetypal hero, such as Inigo Montoya. After his father’s brutal murder by the six-fingered man, Inigo spends his life searching for his killer so he may bring his father’s spirit to rest. Inigo Montoya’s experience with common archetypes, his quest along the Hero’s Journey, and the heroic qualities he possesses aids in portraying him as an archetypal hero.
Beowulf qualifies as a hero in his own way he has his own strengths and does not exactly follow campell’s way of the hero. Beowulf is a warrior that has defeated many beasts and men alike with his bare hands alone. He has never been defeated by any beast , Beowulf is the ultimate hero , although he does not exactly follow cambell’s way of the hero, he still manages to maintain some of the same characteristics. I believe the idea of heroism from the time of Beowulf to now have changed drastically. In the time of Beowulf and the writing of Beowulf, a hero was seen as someone who had attributions such as bravery, honor, value, and arrogance. As we see many of these ideas in Beowulf himself, especially arrogance. You often hear throughout the reading that Beowulf always speaks highly of himself. He claims that he is the only one that has the ability to defeat Grendel.
