Infectious diseases are the invasion of host organisms, (microbes) which can be invisible to the eyes. The microbes are also known as pathogens. A microbe infects an organism (which is known as the host of the microbe). In a human host, the microorganism causes a disease by either disrupting an important body process or by stimulating the immune system to mount a defensive reaction. The pathogen, interferes with the normal functioning of the host and can lead to chronic wounds, gangrene, loss of an infected limb, and even death. The host's response to infection is inflammation. An interaction between parasite and host, whereby the relationship is beneficial for the former but detrimental to the latter, is characterized as parasitism.
hat many people don’t know is that Jessica Biel started her entertainment career as a vocalist. She appeared in a number of musical productions before getting her big breakout role as Mary Camden in the family TV show 7th Heaven. Today, many people still remember her from this role even though the series wrapped up approximately 13 years ago.
Infection control refers to action devoted to policies and procedures that reduce the risk of spreading infections, reduce the occurrence of diseases caused by bacteria and viruses, parasite. The infectious diseases are normally spread by human to human, human to animal contact or by ingestion of food, droplet in the air, and contact with a surface that is the vehicle of the infective agent. H1N1, commonly known as the swine flu, a viral infection, was a cause of 2009 world-wide pandemic. The virus was first found in pigs, but a similar virus also found in humans. The virus spreads in a same manner as any other seasonal flu, mainly by droplets (small particles in the air) when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even talks, but also by touching
Seizures occur due to an abnormal electrical charge in the brain. There are two different types of seizures: generalized and partial seizures. They are classified as two different groups because of where and how they begin. Generalized seizures begin with an electrical charge that affects both sides of the brain at one time. Partial seizures begin with one electrical impulse that only affects a small part of the brain. Unusually low blood sugar levels, brain injuries, strokes, brain tumors, cancer, the used of drugs such as cocaine, medications and flashing lights can be the cause of a seizure. Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cell activity is disturbed and causes seizures. However, doctors can use several tests to determine if a person
Small red bumps, an itchy rash, pain when anyone touches it…these are some of the symptoms of Shingles. A viral disease also known as herpes zoster is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It’s also the same virus that causes chickenpox (varicella). Unlike chickenpox which can cover a person’s entire body, shingles typically stays in a local area. The bright red rash that’s typical is in a single stripe on either the left or right side of the body. The symptoms can vary from person to person as well as the duration. Typically there’s some tingling anywhere from 2 to 4 days before the rash appears but it could be as far out as weeks before the rash appears.
Syphilis is an acute disease that was not perfectly understood until scientists start to do clinical researches over patients having the disease and the bacteria themselves. Experiments were done on syphilis to understand how it proceeds, and how it can be cured. After the discovery of this affliction, doctors tried very hard to understand the disease, so they did various experiments. some of them were legal while others were illegal. In 1932, The Tuskegee syphilis experiment was done on black people in Alabama by U.S public health service. The purpose of that experiment was to understand the progression of syphilis over human body. However, the experiment involved six hundred black men, this disease infected 301 of them and
• Chest pain - ranging from a mild feeling of constriction to intense pressure resembling a heart
Shingles also has other names such as Zoster, Herpes zoster, or Zona. It is a viral infection that causes a skin rash to the injured person. It is the same virus that infects person and causes him to chickenpox disease. There are some ways to treat people with Shingles disease, which has many symptoms that can evolve and become more dangerous if
HPV is spread by skin to skin contact.4 Barrier methods such as condoms and dental dams are only effective if the infected area is covered, creating a serious challenge for prevention. However, a quadrivalent
Smallpox was the most serious poxvirus disease in humans, caused by Variola virus (VARV). It was spread by inhalational exposure of oral, nasal or pharyngeal droplets that contained the virus and initially caused influenza like symptoms such as fever of at least 38.3°C, muscle pain, malaise, headache and prostration. After 10-14 days incubation the classic poxvirus rash would appear on the face, all four limbs, mucous membranes of the mouth, tongue, palate and throat. When visible lesions first observed, temperature falls to near normal, and the lesions rapidly enlarged and ruptured, developing from macules to papules and eventually pustules that dried up and crusted over by 14 to 16 days if the patient survived. By day 16-20, scabs would form
Genital Herpes is common in the United States affecting both men and women ages 14-49 years of age. It is a highly contagious disease that can be spread by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who is infected. It is a lifelong disease that can only be maintained with antiviral medications that will help lessen the severity of an outbreak. Different types of diagnosis will be tested along with physical examination. Staying in a monogamous relationship and practicing safe sex will decrease the chance of catching the disease.
Shingles is a painful rash that develops on a side of the face or body, it will form blisters that will scab over in around 7 to 10 days. Shingles or Herpes Zoster, its more scientific name, is common virus and it is caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. After a the chicken pox virus has been resolved it enter a dormant state in certain nerve cells of the body although for reasons not entirely clear the virus can awaken years later and will travel down the nerve path and cause shingles, the location of the rash depends on where the virus was dormant.
(C) APPROACH We propose to test the hypothesis that papillomavirus infection and persistence are influenced by local host defense factors. MmuPV1 persistent infection at mucosal sites in outbred and inbred nude mice can be tracked (15-17) in addition to skin sites (35)(Preliminary data). Interestingly, not all sites showed the same level of susceptibility to MmuPV1 infection. For example, the back skin has been the least susceptible site when compared with other skin sites such as the tail and the muzzle. The vaginal tract is the most susceptible site when compared with the other mucosal sites such as oral and anal sites (16, 17, 34, 36). To obtain the robust and unbiased results, we will include up to six samples (3-4 samples are commonly used for this kind of study) of each group for RNA sequencing. To minimize the variables in the study, we plan to use the inbred mouse strain (NU/J-Foxn1nu/J). To minimize the variation in age, the siblings of the infected mice without infection will be used as negative controls. In Specific
“Here I am saying it can happen to anybody. Even me, Magic Johnson,” he states (Greenberg, np). Johnson says that getting AIDS can happen to anyone, no matter how rich, poor, or famous, and he is the proof. Johnson did not intend to get AIDS also known as acquired immune deficiency system. It just happens sometimes, usually on accident.
According to CDC “syphilis is an STD that can cause long-term complications”. There are four stages to this disease: primary, secondary, latent and tertiary. Syphilis can only be spread by direct contact. In 2003 more 56,400 cases were reported in the United States. Syphilis is a very contagious disease that can be caught by both men and women.
