I had a great experience with the interview I conducted with the high school counselor who made a positive impact in my life, Mr. Rios. Through our conver-sations, I gain more insight of his roles as a school counselor. What Mr. Rios shared with me in regards to his duties allowed me to have a better understanding if I could see myself in his position. Although I originally wanted to become an el-ementary school teacher, being in Mr. Rios’s office where students came into his office and would walk by just to say bye as they left school made me smile. At that moment, I was able to clearly see into my future and myself as a high school counselor. Ultimately, I am in this field because I want to make changes, help, and impact others to become
My name is Ranee Xiong, and I am a Junior at the University of Minnesota, Morris. I am a Human Services major with a Sociology minor. For my final paper for this year, I have to interview a person within this field, and I am wondering if I could interview you for my final paper. Like you, I want to become a school counselor, so I thought it would be great to interview someone who is in the field that I want to be in.
Roles and Functions of School Counselors: The ASCA National Model From its origins in early vocational guidance to ASCA’s National Model, school counseling has seen dramatic shifts in how it delivers its services. Today, the role and functions of the school counselor are undergoing a paradigm shift as the profession embraces the various components of the ASCA National Model (2005a) and the call to promote equity and social justice in our schools and communities become louder (Holomb-McCoy, 2007; Ratts, DeKruyf, & Chen-Hayes, 2007). The ASCA National Model identifies four elements that are critical to the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program: foundation, delivery, management, and accountability. Four overarching
Professionally, it is my intent to develop lasting relationships that will provide the support needed to be successful in this field. Finally, I would like to give as many children, as many people who are in need of a voice the chance to be
I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
I would like to inspire the people to be happy and help out their peers when they need help. The second reason would be to further my relationships with others around me. What better way to get involved with those living near me than by becoming an RL. Being able to have the chance to gain the trust of those around me will allow other to fell that they can come to me anytime they have a problem or need advice on something particular. The third reason is that I know it will be exciting to get involved in something I like to do which is talk and get to know new people.
Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted to help others. That was my dream, although I was unsure how I wanted to help. So when I heard about all the amazing thing you could do with an bioengineering degree, I decide that 's what I wanted to do. I feel like this major will help me to achieve and help many people along the way. having the knowledge to help so many is what I am interested in the most.
I work to end stigmas in my life about standards that women are expected to live up to. I am more loving of others. I want to do anything I can to actively reform the lives of
of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) my responsibility lies with the student. a. “Professional school counselors have a primary obligation to the students, who are to be treated with dignity and respect as unique individuals.” c. “Professional school counselors respect students’ values, belief, and cultural background and do not impose the school counselor’s personal values on students or family.” e. “Professional school counselors promote the welfare of individual students and collaborate with them to develop an action plan for success” (2010).
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) (2012) created The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling programs as a means for student achievement by focusing on three areas of development; academic, career, and personal-social. School counselors can use the ASCA National Model as a guideline for the design of their own counseling programs. Programs that are based on the model can provide equitable access to the counseling program for all students, identify the knowledge and competencies that students should possess as a result of the program, and establish methods to the deliver the program to students (ASCA, 2012). Comprehensive school counseling programs have also been said to be successful when implemented within a diverse environment. Having diverse faculty members can create a positive school culture and improve student achievement because students are bound to develop relationships with staff members from similar races and ethnicities (McMahon, Mason, Guenther, & Ruiz, 2014).
I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.
My Purpose My family system has a tremendous influence on my decision of becoming a social worker. My family has carried great pride in their ability to help others in need. My parents always taught me that the greatest gift you have is the capacity to help others.
Helping others was something I wanted to incorporate into my career. Making a change in the world is something that is very meaningful to me, and I believe if you are not working to help others, you are not really fulfilling your true destiny in
In conclusion, my total program experience and field experience was extremely helpful and really allowed me to develop as a school counselor. I have been provided with many opportunities to learn and improve my counseling skills, which will benefit the overall successes of my future clients. I have learned that leadership, consulting, collaboration, advocacy, ethics, and personal awareness are all roles a school counselor must fulfill. Knowing all the roles I will have the ASCA National Model really provided me with some insight on how to fulfill these roles. Topics’ ranging from responsive services to ethics the ASCA National Model provides me with actions plans and intervention strategies I can use with my students/clients.
Overall, the interview process was not a difficult one. We were given the questions already, so I did not have to worry too much about them. I am used to interviewing people, as it has become a requirement across a few of my classes in both high school and college. I found that generally, most of my interviewees were very enthusiastic about the interviews. They were willing to go in depth with their answers and did not really hold back on anything.
Career Autobiography There are many things that I feel have led me to year number two of graduate school pursuing a career as a school counselor. For I while I tried to convince myself that a career in school counseling was not for me and ultimately everything led me here. My mother has been a school counselor for the last 25 years and I grew up watching her do something she loved. I went to school everyday and watched my mother make a positive impact on many of my classmates and this left a very lasting impression on me.
