According to Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming service, hip-hop is the world’s most popular genre of music. This is an amazing feat from a genre created less than fifty years ago in New York City. Modern day hip-hop deviates from its original purpose of providing a voice for underrepresented groups as hip-hop spread throughout the country and became overly commercialized. Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc, created hip-hop at a Halloween party in the Bronx of New York City in 1973. Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. The article Full Circle, by James McBride, is about his detailed observations of key areas in Dakar, Senegal. He uses his own experience from America to form a dominant view to reinforce his validity in his statements. This leads to his main point to fully take root that hardships have always inspired music and that rap/hip-hop, “It all comes home to Africa”. Rap has always been a genre used to show self-expression and “Rap doesn’t belong to the American culture, it belongs here. It has always existed here, because of our pain and the hardships and our suffering.”
Studies have shown that learning how to read and play music, and even listening to music has an impact on the development of the brain. Music requires the use of both the left and right sides of the brain. After learning music I have noticed a change in the way I view music, my social skills and my thought processes. All of these things I believe are at least partially because of being in band and, they have all changed my life for the better After learning how to read and play music I noticed that I view, or should I say hear, music in a completely different way.

A hippie is a member of a subculture that was originally formed by the youth in the United States during the 1960’s. By the time everyone else in the US had caught in to the ‘newest trend, it had spread to many other countries around the world.
Supporting Goodling’s speech, Murphy Browne adds, “Imagine how much poorer the world would be without the melodies and lyrics of Africans like Bob Marley and the Wailers. Africans, whether from the continent or the Diaspora, have greatly influenced world music for generations” (Browne, Murphy. “African rhythms have influenced world music for generations”). Browne is correct. If many African lyrics and music did not exist, modern music would not be as efficient and great as it is today.

“There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in” (Greene, 1904-1991). Music is essential to every person’s life and seems to be involved in every activity of a child’s life from the moment they wake until they go to bed. Recent studies have shown that music (listening and playing instruments) have many impacts on children, especially in early stages of development of the child’s “body, brain, and their emotion foundations that support us for the rest of our lives” (Borgese, n.d.). There are also many other factors that affect child development like type/genre of music both violent and nonviolent that may contribute or hinder the future child’s behavior. Different music can have different effects on people, people don’t absorb the effect of music the same way.

From my earliest memories of my cousin, and I putting on a sold out concert on my papaw’s front porch; to putting my baby dolls to sleep with lullabies. Music has always been a big part of my life: it was the one thing I could always count on, no matter where I went; and that still stands true today.
