Prior to World War I, weapons like the musket were used effectively. The muskets had multiple downsides, including the inaccuracy in aiming the weapon, the long reload time, and the range they can fire to. The fix to all these problems the machine gun was created, an accurate gun, with a quick reload time, and a much longer firing range. The machine gun has had a major impact on warfare during World War I, with the improvements over the prior weapons used. These improvements first changed how machine guns were looked at throughout World War I, starting as such an inavative machine used for defense and by the end starting to be used on the attack. In 1884, Hiram Maxim created the first effective machine gun. Originally Hiram Maxim created his machine gun …show more content…
In the earlier wars, it was such a considerable advantage to have the more machine guns than the enemy. If it was not for the invention of the machine gun, the world today would not be the same, and we would be like we are today. Warfare would also be very different from the modern warfare we know today. There would have been a lesser amount of casualties in wars. People would also have to become more skillful in close range combat. Swords would also be used for close range fights, because if your musket shot misses and you are out in the open you won’t have enough time to reload your weapon to take another shot. If the machine gun was never invented, most present day mass killing sprees would never have been as substantial as they are now. The reason I chose this topic, is because I was curious on how we have evolved the original machine guns up to the powerful and reliable weapons the military uses present day in combat. The machine gun effected World War I tremendously, with the increase in the rate of fire, the improvments to accuracy, and the inavation used to have these weapons defend and attack throughout World War
This technology allowed for soldiers to carry more ammunition onto the battlefield as well as load the rifles faster due to not having to pack the gunpowder and bullet into the rifle. Compared to previous muskets the Spencer Rifle was more effective and deadlier on the front lines causing more casualties than in previously fought wars. Artifact D pictures a Colt model revolver used by Navy officers during the war. This revolver worked similar to how Spencer Rifles did but instead of seven shots the revolver was six. Weapon technology like this allowed for officers to have a means of defending themselves while also being able to ride on horseback.
Then by the 1890s the US had constructed a fleet of Steel ships with no sails and running just purely off of their steam engines. Not only did the ship have changes to it self but the guns on the ships were modified too. At first the Navy used heavy single caliber guns but, then noticed that the guns were to slow to use against fast moving ships. They then developed the the quick firing guns. “The weapons' breeches did not need to seal nearly as elaborately as on previous guns, hence they could be worked more rapidly”.
Since its discovery back in A.D. 850 it has been one of the greatest and most influential inventions ever developed. They first used it for starting fires and fireworks, but then soon realized that it could be made into a weapon. The first
The U.S. Civil War brought about the phasing out of older weapon systems and the introduction of many newer weapons systems in addition techniques. Because of this reason, the U.S. Civil War is "The Last Ancient War and The First Modern War". When individuals picture of the U.S. Civil War, most envision a battlefield that is full of cannons and howitzers. The main reason for this the short time period leading up to and during the U.S. Civil War, there where tremendous advancements in the weapons, ammunitions and techniques the Armies of the Civil War used. During the next few paragraphs, I highlight key advancements and differences in these technologies and techniques used in the Civil War. Prior to the Civil War cannons and howitzers,
The US Model 1816 Musket was a .69 caliber weapon that were very effective for hitting targets around 100 yards away. This musket was not a reliable gun but it was still used often in the war. When the war began there was a shortage of firearms on both
“It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it.” These words were spoken by Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general in the Civil War. While the battles during the war were indeed terrible, there was also several aspects General Lee missed in his description. The need to constantly improve during the war allowed for several technological, pharmaceutical, and strategic advances nationwide. However, these changes did not happen overnight.
Both the Civil War and World War I had their respective shares of technological advancements prior to both conflicts taking off. Leadership found the advancements both appealing and appalling. The advancements changed the way the battles were fought, but at what cost in the beginning? With the Civil War edging closer to the horizon in 1861, a new terrifying weapon was being brought to the forefront.
Although, some of the technology failed in its ineffectiveness, other technological innovations such as weaponry and communicative devices not only caused bloodier wars, but such innovative advancements have also influenced the results of the Civil War. In order to understand the significance of technological innovation, one must know the different kinds of advanced technology such as the tools the people used for combat, communication, transportation, and survival. The Union and the Confederates used weaponry such as guns, rockets, grenades, and mines for better accuracy and efficient shooting. They also used warships and floodlights for sinking and searching other ships.
Smoothbore muskets were the base of all Civil War battles. While their accuracy was distorted
The artillery grew from direct fire cannons that were placed on the front line in support of infantry to a decisive component of war. In order to accomplish this rise of dominance on the battlefield, great leaps in technology had to be realized: rifled bores, improvement of breech loading technology and recoil mechanisms. Along with these advancements in technology came added capability, and therefore required the adaptation of an. It took some time for the artillery to transition from using the battery commander to identify targets to incorporating a forward observer with the maneuver elements. After these advances the Field Artillery needed to adapted methods of employment that allowed artillery fire to account for over 80% percent of the casualties during WWI.
The machine gun was a significant player in trench warfare and the shift towards it, in that it made defending trenches from enemy soldiers very easy for the defending troops because of the high fire rate and wide range of fire the machine gun had. The invention of the machine gun was a factor for the break of conventional warfare in World War I and for the emergence of trench warfare. The usual strategy that was used in prior wars was no good in World War I. Soldiers could no longer run at the enemy head on and attack them because the machine gun was too quick to out maneuver or ambush. With this advance in weaponry, there needed to be an advancement in mobility to counter or at least match the ferocity of the machine gun. Unfortunately, there was no advancements in mobility and the machine gun was able to tear through enemy forces with ease as there was a lack of mobility to provide protection for the defending forces.
So many technological advancements were created and those advancements helped with what we have today. The weapons, vehicles, and machines helped modernize war and shaped how we live
Weapon Technology during Civil War Outline Thesis Statement: Weapon technology during the Civil War is very primal in comparison to the weapons of today , but it was a major advancement in getting to that point. I.New Weapons Technology a. Rifled Musket Weapon b.
Some were very deadly while others were very ineffective. One of these ineffective weapons was the Gatling gun. It was created in 1862 and was essentially the first machine gun ever made, however it was rarely used during the Civil War. “ The gun required large amounts of ammunition which the Union saw as being wasteful” (“How Did Civil War Technology Create Modern War?”). It was created by Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling in hopes that the weapon would be so destructive that it would end the Civil War quickly.
Advancements in Weaponry Throughout America’s history of war, weaponry has played a major factor in conflict. Weapons were improved for the benefit of the American soldiers. Since American war instruments have been improved in technology, the U.S was able to exceed over their opponents in war from the Colonial Era to the Antebellum Era. The usage of improved weaponry was a major advantage for the United States.
