Iloilo is a popular destination for the tourists because of its abundance of historical churches and cemeteries that were constructed during the colonization of the Spaniards. Although some churches fell into ruin because of the great Panay Earthquake in 1948, some still survived and continued to relay the stories from the time we were under the Spanish rule. A lot of notable historical landmarks in Iloilo are the cemeteries. We should give our total respect for our loved ones who had passed on and the best place to do so is in a cemetery. The cemeteries can be the sources of historical information that are really important in deciphering the history of a particular place. Sementeryo comes from the Spanish word cementerio which is synonymous …show more content…
This continued until 19th century. Almost an hour ride with a jeepney from Ungka Terminal (Christ the King), you will arrive to the Municipality of Janiuay - a munipality where countless historical stories had been made, a municipality where numerous historical landmarks are standing. Janiuay which is pronounced as “ha-nee-wai” has a rich cultural history where you can see fascinating places such as the Romanesque Janiuay Church that can be dated from the Spanish years, the Japanese Watch Towers found at Suagui Bridge that was used during World War II and the Janiuay Cemetery which is the topic of this narrative. During a camping last 2012 in Lambunao when I was still in high school, I remembered to pass through the road of Janiuay where you can clearly see the majestic cemetery. My classmates were in awe and asked me what that place is since they know that I have lived in Janiuay in the past and is still coming back to visit my grandmother. When I told them that it was a cemetery, they were in shock. They thought it was a park or something similar to that but never a cemetery. I can understand them; such elaborate designs should be fitting for a park, right? And that’s why I take pride in the beautiful Janiuay …show more content…
It was a splendid affair with the appearance of the guest-of-honor Msgr. Pedro Payo who was the Archbishop of Manila at that time. The Gothic Cemetery was created with big blocks of limestone that were transported from the town of Dingle to Janiuay which is about 27 kilometres away. The construction was finally done on November 5, 1884 and inaugurated on November 20, 1885. True to its description as the” most artistic cemetery in the country”, the cemetery majestically sits on the top of hill, making it the highlight of barangay Damu-ong. With the three enormous staircases that lead to its corresponding gates that are made from intricately woven metal, it is the most eye-catching structure along the road towards the town plaza. The walls that is of brick and wrought iron surrounds the one-hectare land though missing some crosses and grand stone santos that have previously adorned it. The impressive three staircases that leads to the entrance of the cemetery has 21 steps to the rightmost entrance; 23 steps to the main entrance; and 22 to the leftmost entrance. The cemetery is protected by steel fences that are supported with stone
Jacob M. Taylor, a “late farmer” and director of several companies, conceived the idea of establishing a cemetery in Trenton on the highlands above the Delaware River at the southern edge of the city in 1857. He presented his plan to William M. Force, a merchant; John K. Smith, a retired iron manufacturer; Isaac Stephens, a merchant; David Witherup, a carpenter by trade and an incorporator and superintendent of Mercer Cemetery; and William S. Yard, a blacksmith and railing maker; and they together founded Riverview Cemetery on January 16,
I have driven by the Makawao Veterans Cemetery but have never stop and paid my respects. I respect those like your friend’s grandfather and your own grandfather for serving their country in order for us to have our own freedom. I thought it was so sweet that your friend’s grandmother shared stories about the love she had for her husband. There is something I like about how the military cemeteries are mad and organize. They are so put together and nicely maintained and with the American flags these cemeteries just command respect.
Did you know that there is a cemetery that holds every found soldier that ever fought in World War 1, World War 2, and The Korean war? Well yes, the Arlington National Cemetery holds more than four hundred thousand people over six hundred acres of land. It is the world's most important cemetery. You may wonder how the government found this land, and said,”Hey lets use this land as a cemetery.”
It served as a war hospital during both the Revolutionary and the Civil War where the wounded were tended and those who passed were buried. Many famous people, including George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, George Wythe, Patrick Henry, and President George Washington were buried in its magnificent courtyard. In fact, several 17th century graves still lie intact so far down in the ground under the churchyard, that a rule was made later stating that graves can be no more than 4.5 feet into the ground. Though it had recognizable value in this time period, the Bruton Parish is still implausibly relevant

Green Acres Cemetery really surprised me with all of the different types of memorials they had there. While most of the grave markers were traditional-looking headstones, there were also several giant and elaborate memorials. There was one memorial in particular towards the back of the cemetery that had a concrete divider around the whole plot and it contained a whole family. There was a very large memorial in a tombstone shape at the head of the plot that had a picture of the husband, wife, and daughter-who was holding her puppy, and one single date of death for all three of them engraved into it. The memorial had steps coming down from it, and a bench attached as well and all appeared to be made out
A sacred space is defined as a location that has been designated by a group as worthy of devotion or loyalty. A sacred space can be a cemetery, monument, or any type of location that represents a connection to an object of devotion. These sacred spaces link people of the present and future to the past and help them to remember something or someone that deserves their devotion, loyalty, and respect. A sacred space can be represented by a famous battle, building, location where a historical event occurred, or even a famous person who did something for their community. In my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas one example of a sacred space would be a monument of a famous person who lived in the city, Selena Quintanilla.
This is one of the civilizations that flourished form the ninth to thirteenth century A.D, and is now home to enormous archeological sites. Among the sites, there is evidence of remains of skulls racks, which once displayed the multiple rows of stone-craved skulls of sacrificial victims (Brandes 1998, 190). However, during the Spanish Conquest, much of the design was removed and completely destroyed by the beginning of the Sixteenth century (Shcmal 2010). During the time of the Spanish Conquest, the Aztec and the Zapotec were the leading power holders of the region of southern Mexico. Because of this, it only makes sense that their usage of elaborate representations of death was then carried over into the artwork of colonial Mexico, becoming, then, associated with Dia de Los Muertos (Brandes 2003,
The need to memorialize events or people is complex; in some cases, monuments honor moments of great achievement, while in other cases, monuments pay homage to deep sacrifice. A monument 's size, location, and materials are all considerations in planning and creating a memorial to the past. In any case, the need to honor or pay homage to a specific person or event is prevalent within society. A monument has to mean something to the society it is place in. The location of a monument is perhaps the most important aspect of creating a successful monument to honor and show respect to a person or event.
In ancient Egyptian civilisation, religion was heavily embedded in ritualistic performances. There have been numerous amounts of archaeological discoveries that suggest, the ordinary life of an ancient Egyptian was in parallel of a belief, that there was a life after death they should thrive for. Isis and Osiris originated as a myth and although there is no exact timeline where we can pin point its beginning, there have been some fragments of the tale written in the Pyramid of Teti and walls of burial tombs which date back sometime around the Old Kingdom of Egypt (Dynasties III- VI) circa 2778-2300 B.C. It revisits once again around the Middle Kingdom (Dynasties XI-XIII) circa 2065-1785 B.C., in the Ramesseum Dramatic Papyrus (Egyptian Passion
I choose the Crystal River State Archaeological State Park in Crystal River , Florida. It is more commonly know as the Indian Burial Mounds. The park itself is in a beautiful location , overlooking the Crystal River on one side and grassy plains on the other side. There is recreational activities in the park as well as the museum. Some of the activities are salt and freshwater fishing , picnicking , bird watching and nature walks.
The Colonial Park Cemetery is one of the most haunted places in all of Savannah, Georgia. The cemetery opened in 1750. Today it is the oldest burial ground. There where very few burial ground prior to 1750. Most of them have been shut down so they can make roads and other things like parks.
Introduction Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica is one of the most famous antique architecture works in Vietnam that were built during the time of French colonisation, that is nowadays a religious venue as well as a tourist attraction. It is special not only because of its long-lasting Romanesque-Gothic beauty that pops up in the middle of a busy boulevard in Ho Chi Minh City, but also because it has been standing for 135 years, witnessing the ups and downs in the history of Vietnam; how French colonialists left, how Chinese annexationists came, and how Vietnamese people themselves fight against each other. Moreover, it was one of the victims in World War II, which caused the 59 windows and pieces of shingles to break. Though I am not a Catholic, I am still attracted to its beauty.
The first day, called “Día de los Angelitos” (Day of the Little Angels), is dedicated to the souls of deceased children, while November 2nd is set aside for the souls of adults. In preparation for these days, families may clean their homes to welcome the arrival of the souls of their loved ones. Many people also visit cemeteries to decorate the graves of the dead with their favorite items and flowers. Graves and ofrendas are decorated with papel picado, photographs, cherished objects, marigolds (cempasúchitl), and skeletons made of paper or clay. Food and drink are placed on the ofrendas for the dead – people commonly believe that they can still enjoy the tastes and smells.
