Philippine Government Should Take Measures Against the Historical Revisionism of the Marcos Regime
History is one of the most crucial parts of a nation. It influences what a nation thinks, but more importantly, how a nation thinks. History, as they say, is the backbone of a nation as it supports a country and its people. It helps us understand where we come from and who we are (Dodson, 2015), and studying it allows us to be inspired from the accomplishments made by the society, as well as to learn from the mistakes that were committed in the past by our ancestors, and in turn, apply what we have learned from there for the betterment and progress of the society today. By definition, history is a continuous, typically chronological, record

One of which is positive revisionism or the Academic Historical Revisionism. It is described as the addition of new information due to the access of newly found data and development. Examples of which are the discovery that the earth is not flat, the heliocentricity of our planet, and of the like. On the contrast, the other kind of historical revisionism is negative revisionism or Negationist Historical Revisionism. It is the revision of history by denial and distortion for political purposes, ideological purposes and of the like. Famous examples are the denial of the Holocaust, and the alteration of the truth about the Marcos …show more content…
In an article by Crabtree(1993), he states that “the past helps a child understand who he is.” It greatly influences a child’s beliefs and perspectives of life. Moreover, he also states that “Modern society, however, has turned its back on the past. We live in a time of rapid change, a time of progress. We prefer to define ourselves in terms of where we are going, not where we come from.” This mentality of this new generation is quiet alarming. It is easy for some to say move on and just bury the man, but it is not just that. The whole debate is not just about burying the man, it is more so about the justice that the people who were greatly affected by the regime did not attain. “We are failing to fully acknowledge the thousands murdered and left in the streets; the tens of thousands illegally arrested and tortured; the billions of dollars stolen; the millions forced into poverty; the tens of thousands of Filipinos killed during his war in Mindanao, and millions of Filipinos displaced.” (Ynchausti, 2016), this fact is the one that is being ignored by some of the youth today. “Young people should know there are lies that should be uncovered. If they could only use their skills in social media, look for what happened during martial law, they will see that so much power was concentrated in one man and this was used

The history of the United States of America has often been punctuated by moments of triumph, and also by grievous lapses in moral and ethical judgements. For years, students have learned about the entirety of our country’s history in school. However, a school board in Colorado recently attempted to prevent this from happening. Their decision to alter the American history curriculum in order to promote patriotic values angered many students, who then protested this decision. Leonard Pitts, a journalist for the Miami Herald, openly criticized the school board’s move.
“If we did something wrong we made sure to say excuse me [..] If we did something terribly wrong we immediately said we were sorry” (Otsuka 122-123). The children expected to be greeted warmly by their previous classmates when they returned, but they were ignored and made fun of by their old friends. The people around them made the children ashamed to just walk outside, being judged by hateful stares. Being thrown back into society and having to take the blame and suffer for the actions of others can affect a child's psyche
However one might say society is often caught up in the past. The well known catch phrase, “we learn from our mistakes,” has also been a basis for many individuals in achieving prosperity. In the novel the question about the impact of one’s past on their destiny
“The past is not history, only the raw materials of it” (“The Strange Death of Silas Deane”). Imagine history as art; one must understand that, given the same materials, each artist creates a different piece. As with artists, historians select and mold their materials in different ways. One way in which it is possible to split the different styles is by examining the reason for which they believe change occurs: agreement or conflict. When considering U.S. history, consensus and revisionists have two very different theories.
History is made from stories, stories that have been passed from generation to generation, eventually written down and recorded as a record. Most often History is written by the powerful, the victorious, and so facts can become twisted and history can grow to not truly reflect reality. In context, the winners of a game may justly say they won but intentionally leave out the penalties they took or the goals the other team scored. Similarly, this happens in history and so history must be revised upon the discovery of new facts and evidence to be able to do justice to the reality of events.
Our past watches us, creeping behind to seize opportunities away from
“So, like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us (Gaston Bachelard).” This quote means that even in our most mature times we can still act like a child. I know for a fact that everyone still has part of our childhood with us. Even if we think that we are all grown up we still have a child’s spirit. It even says in the bible that we should have the faith of the child.
To Americans and many others around the world, the U.S. is the face of what should be a “free society,” not including every society’s minor flaws. Maybe it’s because I’m barely entering the brink of my social awareness as a U.S. citizen or maybe is it more due to recent threats to our freedom as Americans, but now more than in the past decade or so, the media has brought the image of huge protests, riots, and demonstrations into the spotlight. And unfortunately, more often than not, many of these events result in violence, aggression, and opposition. Nonetheless, people’s intentions and visions of victory surely do not aim to end in chaos and harm to our societies.
While he looks fondly on memories of the past the looming presence of the present and future are very prominent throughout his essay. Their expert use of narration assists the telling of their stories and how they view their past experiences.
Historical revisionists only look at the evidence that supports their claims, while ignoring the whole of the evidence that could possibly discredit their beliefs. I am going to restrict my research to a few basic claims and try to identify how each claim is based on belief or feelings rather than scientific evidence. First the claim that the number of bodies cremated was not mathematically possible at the killing centers, and concentration camps. However, like all great systematic endeavors, they usually have small beginnings that lead to ambitious feats.
An example of this would be the government lying claiming that they had saved 580,000 Jewish refugees, this was soon proven as false (“Americans and the Holocaust”). Instead of truly helping Jews who were being killed by the minute, the state department lied about it. This implies that the American government was aware of what they should have been doing to help but they simply did not. To add, the
George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Studying history is necessary for people to avoid making the same mistakes. Whether it is about a country’s glory or personal misfortune. Analyzing the past provides valuable lessons for people. They can draw wisdom and adjust their present behaviors.
Before Alex went to China, Alex was a bystander and thought that wars and battles were just games or strategy. When he saw many students his age take part in the demonstrations, he decided to do the same. Like Alex, anyone can do the same. To live in a better environment, everyone must stand up against systems of
INTRODUCTION We belong in a time where the world goes through constant changes. Life today is so fast-paced and dynamic that we sometimes knowingly ignore what 's happening around us since it may instantly change anyway. The Philippines specifically, have gone through great changes in the past several years. These changes have rooted from problems that made it impossible for us to develop and progress as a country.
