There is seven fundamentals every hitter must know to hit the ball solid. Hitting is not easy. It is very important for players to have the fundamentals properly set to be successful at the plate. The first important fundamental in hitting is having the right grip. When gripping the bat, the hitter needs to put pressure with the fingers, not the palms. The bottom hand is the hand that controls the bat while the other hand supports the bat loosely. A hitter must line up their “knocking knuckles”, the knuckles people knock on the door with. Where the battery contacts the ball depends on where the pitch is located. Is it inside, outside, or down the middle? On an inside pitch the batter should contact the ball sooner than the other. It should happen in front of the plate and in front of the front hip. It should be hit on the outside part of the plate with the middle of the bat. A hitter must wait on an outside pitch because if they swing to early, they will either miss it or hit it at the end of the bat. When it is hit at the end of the bat it is painful, and will result in a ground ball to the right side of the field. When a pitch is down the middle a hitter should hit it directly in front of the plate in the middle of the bat. That is the easiest pitch to hit, and is known as the wheelhouse pitch. The last fundamental is the follow-through. After contact the hitter must concentrate on hitting through the ball. The bat should continue through to move in the same direction as the ball. All of their weight should transfer with all of their weight from their back leg to their front. This helps a full follow-through and a quicker time to first base. After contact is made and the follow-through is finished, the hitter's weight should be balanced between both feet with the hitter's ear, back shoulder, hip and back knee in line with one
